Alzheimer disease in America vs South America
Alzheimer disease in America vs South America
You will be writing a scientific report about a disease or health condition. You can do your paper alone or in a group of up to 5 people. Each group will write one paper. The paper will be an investigation into a disease or health outcome based on epidemiological studies published in the peer reviewed literature. I suggest that you focus on a specific topic (e.g., Lyme disease in western Europe or gestational diabetes among African American women).
General instructions:
• Write your paper in Word or RTF (.rtf or .docx or .doc). No other format will be accepted and will result in a grade of 0.
• 8-10 pages double spaced, excluding title page abstract, references and figures and tables
• 12 point font, 1 inch margins, double spaced
• Submit your paper in Blackboard.
• Write in the 3rd person.
• Avoid using direct quotes. I have seen too often that an inexperienced writer will use long passages from other sources to make their points for them and then put the text in quotes and cite it. This is lazy and defeats the purpose of having you write a paper IN YOUR OWN WORDS. You may use occasional, brief (9 words or fewer) bursts of quoted text to emphasize a point. But then you must in your own words explain what the quote means and contextualize it for me. In 99% of the cases, this means it would simply be easier to just use you own words in the first place and forget the quotes.
• Even if you do not use quotes, you still need to use citations. Citations are used every time that you present a piece of factual information that is not common knowledge or every time you present an opinion, theory, or hypothesis attributed to another thinker. Use a biomedical journal format for citing references. A good guide to citing references can be found here: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html
• Please be careful about copying text of any sort. When you are using several different sources at once (particularly from the internet or electronic copies) it is disastrously easy to “accidentally” copy text into your paper. If you do this intentionally, even only a few key words, it will be viewed as plagiarism. In this course, the result of plagiarism is at minimum a 0 on the paper and could be an automatic F for the course and a report to the Provost’s Office.
• At least 5 of your references should be from reputable journals but you may also cite sources from government agencies, a published book from a reputable publisher, or a report or monograph from a well-known and respected research or United Nations organization. If a website has interesting facts or statistics, find their source. Quote the ORIGINAL source, not the website that has compiled them for your use. The one possible exception may be massive online data files like from the CDC or from the state Department of Public Health. If you have any questions, see me during office hours.
• Do not use emotional writing and do not make value judgements in a scientific paper. While this is a writing project and you should be creative with your approach to science, this is not a “Creative Writing” class. You should state facts in a straightforward way and limit your use of adjectives. You should not describe a health outcome as “heartbreaking” and “terrible” or describe a person as “thoughtless” or “unfeeling.” You can use adjectives to describe a “strong” statistical relationship or talk about “substantial” impact of a policy, but please curtail your impulse to make this into a Victorian novel.
• You will have tables and/or figures in your report. You can either put these in the body of the paper in the appropriate place if you can figure out how to do that or at the end. Either way, each figure/table needs to be numbered and have a title. In the text where the table or figure is referenced the author should include a note that refers to it such as (Table 1) or (Figure 2).
Specific instructions:
You are writing a scientific research paper with elements of the STROBE format. Please see the von Elme paper that is on the Blackboard site for guidance. Included below are ADDITIONAL points that you should consider that are specific to this assignment.
1. Title page
a. Must include descriptive but brief title
b. Include all authors
c. Identify this as coming from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, College of Health Sciences
2. Abstract
a. Should be brief, typically shorter than 200 words
b. Unstructured abstract
c. Should contain the main points from the paper.
3. Introduction
a. Less than 1 page
b. What is the health issue you are investigating and why is it important?
i. You may want to add a few sentences about the history of the disease/condition
c. Provide enough information to support your choice of topic.
d. What is the research question or objective of the paper?
4. Distribution (person, place, and time)
a. Discuss the incidence or prevalence of the condition, specific to the population (person, place and time) that you are focusing on for your paper
5. Natural history
a. What are the signs, symptoms, and progression of the disease or condition?
6. Diagnosis
a. How is the disease/condition diagnosed?
7. Based on your topic, include either the information in A or B.
a. Infectious disease
i. Agent
ii. Transmission
iii. Risk groups
b. Not infectious disease/condition: describe 3 major risk factors or causes
8. Major prevention and control measures (including treatment, if available)
9. Conclusion
10. 3-5 figures and/or tables (at least 1 must include incidence, prevalence, and/or mortality statistics)
11. References
a. At least 5 of your references should be from reputable journals but you may also cite sources from government agencies, a published book from a reputable publisher, or a report or monograph from a well-known and respected research or United Nations organization. If a website has interesting facts or statistics, find their source. Quote the ORIGINAL source, not the website that has compiled them for your use. The one possible exception may be massive online data files like from the CDC or from the state Department of Public Health. If you have any questions, see me during office hours.
b. Use numbered superscripts in the text of the paper that correlate to the numbers of the citations to identify the scientific points that you are supporting with references.
c. Make sure that the references are numbered in the order that they appear in the text of the paper.
