Escape From the Western Culture
Michael Pollan is a teacher at the University of California. “Escaping from the western culture” is an article derived from many of Michael Pollan’s books. His major interest is research on eating habits and diets. In his article, he tries to explain the causes of diseases in the United States, which in this case is referred to as the west. He argues that people with habits of feeding on food from the West are at a higher risk of developing sophisticated chronic disease, compared to their counterparts who feed more on traditional foods(Pollan 422). Pollan suggests that if people will feed on just enough food, mostly plants, then the rate of diet-related diseases will decrease significantly. Statistics data and medical reports can prove this.
Pollan audience is the Americans who are conscious about their health or who have interest on the matter. The main objective of the article is to persuade and to inform the audience. This is made evident by the inability of the opening paragraph to connect at a personal level with readers of the article. Throughout the article, he uses descriptive language to express his ideas, rules, and beliefs to persuade the readers.
At some point in the article, Pollan sways out of topic, as he attributes health issues to the additives that are included in foods. His intentions are to make the reader frustrated with his or her lack of spending of money and time on the preparation of food.In addition to that, he later highlights on the availability of medications to curb the disease other than sticking to the main topic which is the American’s eating habits. This tends to confuse the audience on the true intention and topic of the article
Tools used to by Pollan to persuade the readers
Ambiguousness
Pollan does not clearly elaborate on his statements. This leaves room for misinterpretations. At some point in the article, he talks of the amount of time people-Americans-should be spend in preparing their foods. He does not state the precise amount of time. He just states it as “more time”. This leaves the readers with the question of how much time is enough time. There are those who will think spending of twenty minutes to be enough, while others will consider the same amount of time not to be enough.
Logical fallacies
Though not stated, one can infer from the entire article the either-or fallacy. The article has the view of a two-way traffic. That is, if something fails to go this way, then it’s the other way round. Pollan’s article insinuates that there is an impending danger if not his ideas, guidelines and suggestions on food consumption are not applied. The second fallacy is that of appeal to emotions. After stating, “much lip services is given to the importance of prevention”(Pollan 425) he goes ahead to say that the medical sector is likely to profit more from the giving medications compared to preventions, thereby lighting the anger fuse for some of the readers.
In conclusion, Pollan offers strong and convincing arguments in this article by citing of examples of the western diet being medicalized. He acknowledges that the responsibility of the health of the American people lies with themselves. This is evident when he urges them to spend more time preparing their meals. Pollan does a great job in explaining his ideas to his audience with little knowledge on diet matters but he misses on expounding on the demerits of all processed foods. For this reason, Pollan looks to be desperate to convince the readers to agree with him on his ideas and views, especially those who might be reading the article for the first time. Generally, it is a useful article although with more explanations on some issues within the article would make it better.
