Assessment Background and Overview: The Patchwork Text

The Patchwork Text approach is a blend of several things. It is an attempt to take account of the variety of different ways in which you learn and are able to present you learning journey.

For the purpose of your assignment it is also the format you will follow and as such your final assessed work will consist of a set of short pieces of writing or ‘patches’ you have built up gradually, week by week from the asynchronous activities carried out during the delivery of the module.

Each patch that results from your asynchronized learning activities posted in the allocated discussion forums and Turnitin folders will be shared with other students and reviewed by a team of academic staff and the format of their presentation may require different kinds of writing e.g. a story, a critical reflection, a case study review, a commentary on an academic paper or the application of a particular theory to a specific organisation.  Each of which has been chosen to represent the diverse nature of the subject along with the kinds of learning suitable to this module.

In summery Winter (2003, 112) defines a Patchwork text as;

“… a variety of small sections, each of which is complete in itself, and that the overall unity of these component sections, although planned in advance, is finalised retrospectively, when they are ‘stitched together’. Thus a ‘patchwork text’ assignment … is gradually assembled … and consists of a sequence of fairly short pieces of writing”

Please note that each of your original activities (patches) chosen should be reviewed and edited using the feedback to improve your final assessment. The patchwork text should be concluded by a summary statement that seeks to patch the work together under the title Innovation Matters.
