Rhetorical Analysis: Community Discourse Analysis Sources

Rhetorical Analysis: Community Discourse Analysis Sources

In the article “Straight Talk What Harry Reid gets about Black English,” McWhorter (2010) seeks to critique the remarks by Harry Reid. Harry Reid, according to the publication, made derogatory claims against African-Americans whom he argued did not have a proper dialect. Blacks, as the article notes, are less equipped to use language aspects inhibiting their ability to communicate effectively properly. However, the author of the study does not share the same sentiments as he argues that different factors and dynamics affect the mannerism of language use and blacks are exposed to different dynamics as compared to whites. There are instances of bias in the text. At one point, McWhorter completely refutes claims made by Harry Reid which imply that there is a black dialect that makes African-Americans incapable of identifying with those in society perceived as the “elite.” It is biased to make a judgment that having a black dialect amounts to being incapable of proper communication. On the other hand, it is also biased for McWhorter to completely rubbish claims by Harry Reid terming them baseless. If anything, Reid’s remarks are based on stereotypic perspectives. It would have been better for McWhorter to break down the dynamics of Reid’s argument before employing bias. On a different note, Reid employs pathos in that he appeals to the emotional hatred that some people have against people of color to discredit the presidency of Obama (McWhorter, 2010). On the other hand, the author employs logos in that he logically discredits the assertions by Reid by terming them as baseless. Arguments are arranged in a line to themes making giving the reading a logical flow. Thus, the article is a reliable and credible source when it comes to the concept of Community Discourse Analysis Sources. McWhorter’s analysis of American perspectives on Black dialects showcases how Black dialects are undermined yet they can use language dynamics appropriately.
Herring (2019), on the other end, expounds on the role of technology when it comes to enhancing discourse analysis. Her study notes that computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) is a new concept that is far effective as opposed to the manual approaches that were used in the past. Therefore, her recommendation for continued use CMDA is due to its ability to address changes in computer-mediated communication. Bias in her argument is that there is bound to be increased computer-mediated communication her approach offers an avenue to assess these changes and make necessary contributions towards discourse analysis. Her claim is biased as the future remains unknown and computer-mediated communication can always take a different turn other than the one she is sure it will pursue. The description is the feature of discourse that she employs in the article since she details what it entails for successful CMDA paradigm. Logos is the means of persuasion that is used in the article to convince readers about the reliability of CMDA in discourse analysis. For instance, the operational aspects of CMDA are presented in addition to its success rate (Herring, 2019). It is as a result of the perceived reliability and high functionality that the author recommends its use in computer-mediated communication (CMC). Opportune moment (kairos) is also employed by the author. She explains her paradigm based on issues that current society can relate with (Herring, 2019). She notes the usefulness of technology in communication and how it can be manipulated to allow effective communication.
