An Ethical Scenario: What Would You Do?
Based upon the APA Division 47 and AASP required readings at the beginning of this unit, consider the following ethical scenario:
A softball coach asks you to facilitate a team meeting about communication. The coach has specified that she will not attend the meeting because she wanted to give the athletes the opportunity to be honest and open with each other. You have agreed to facilitate this meeting. During the course of the meeting, the team begins to share negative complaints about how the coach is managing the team. After the meeting, the coach approaches you and asks, “How did it go?”
Then, respond to the following:
- Consider the limits of confidentiality described in the ethics codes:
- What would be an appropriate way to handle the coach’s question?
- How might you avoid this situation?
- If the coach continues to press you and wants more information, how might you handle this confrontation?
