“Female migrant domestic workers in Gulf cooperation Council (GCC) from Indian Sub-Continent"

Preamble:
Having lived in the middle east and asian countries, i have seen many domestic / blue collar female workers migrating to the GCC countries to improve their families socio-economic conditions whom they have left behind in their home countries.  These workers are subjected to harsh living conditions in the host countries. They not only suffer alienation from their families, but also undergo trauma, isolation etc which has an adverse effect on their mental health status.  The hypothesis I want to bring to light is that

  • These workers experience mental health issues.
  • There are barriers to help seeking behavior given the background they came from
  • That there is a need to address / improve mental health services

Writing Sample Topic:
“Female migrant domestic workers in Gulf cooperation Council (GCC) from Indian Sub-Continent“.
Key words:
Migration, living condition, isolation, abuse, Trauma, impact on mental health, help seeking behavior, coping  mechanism, services available, barriers to mental health services .
My thoughts on the document are as follows:

  • Begin with by explaining the environment that surrounds these domestic workers in their home countries (primarily Indian sub continent) in the present day context
  • Talk about the forces, factors and circumstances under which they migrate to the GCC countries as domestic help.
  • Mental health sufferings of these domestic workers in the host country. This needs to cover the below:
    • The reasons for mental health issues.
    • The stress they face due to migration
    • The isolation these domestic workers face
    • The conditions in which they work
    • The abuse they face
    • The traumatic experience they undergo – be it physical, psychological, emotional et all
    • The lack of access of proper healthcare to these migrant population
    • Etc
  • To discuss
    • Coping strategies the migrant women demonstrate (social network, religion, sense of responsibility as a provider)
  • Conclusion
