HW03 Statistical Techniques in Quality Management

  1. Two Group Mean Comparison

Maggie’s French Fry Study. It is a case from the textbook: page 305. You can find the data at “Data Files for Problems” section of the Blackboard. Please read the case to understand the context of the problem. Then, instead of working on the problems of the book, please conduct following two tests:

  1. (10 pts.) Compare the mean of two different locations (1 and 2). Then establish a statistical significance on the mean difference. Please comment on your results.
Item Your Answer
Formal Hypothesis
Location 1 Mean
Location 2 Mean

  1. Twoway ANOVA and Interaction

Use ANOVA-Twoway Data, please conduct a Twoway ANOVA analysis and offer some discussion required below. Please ONLY choose GlassType 1 and GlassType 3 and Temp 100 and Temp 150 (2 by 2 design) as the experiment data.

  1. Conduct a Twoway ANOVA using Excel and Paste the result in picture in the space below. Please comment on the result. Which one is the sample factor, and which one is the column factor? Please discuss.
  2. (10 pts.) What is the amount of total variations that can be explained by these two factors? (Hint: look for the ratio between SSTR/SST)
  3. Is there any factor(s) turn out to be not introducing any variations to the responses? (Hint: judging by the p-value associated with the factor?)
  4. (10 pts.) Please plot the interaction and paste it here. Do you see interaction effect between two factors? (Hint: Please use attached Interaction Plotting Template)
  5. (Optional) Based on the ANOVA result, can you come up with a prediction model of the outcome variable?

  1. More on Interaction Effect

This is simple example that is inspired by COVID-19.
Currently, the entire world is struggling to understand why some people experience greater pain and some almost feel nothing when contracted by the COVID-19 virus. The table below shows a fictitious example.  Please answer the following questions.

  • (2 pts.) Which factor seems to be a “change maker” (a factor that introduces variations between observations)
    1. Gender
    2. Age
    3. Both gender and age
  • (2 pts.) Which factor seems to have a greater impact in making differences among people?
    1. Gender
    2. Age
    3. Cannot tell
  • (2 pts.) From the experiment design perspective, how many treatment groups are here?
    1. Two
    2. Three
    3. Six
    4. Cannot tell
  • (2 pts.) When we talk about the un-explained the variations, in this particular example, which one are we referring to?
    1. Variation among age groups
    2. Variation between gender groups
    3. Variation within each block (e.g., differences among Jane, Eva, and Kamila)
  • (2 pts.) Which of the following sentence is describing the interaction effect?
    1. When compared to the younger female group, older male group will experience even greater severity than the older female group.
    2. When compared to the younger female group, older female group will experience greater severity.
    3. When compared to the younger female group, younger male group will experience greater severity.

Table: COVID-19 Patient Data – Severity Summary
(Note: The higher the number, the more deadly the symptom is)

  Female Male Average Severity
Younger Group (age <18) Jane, Eva, Kamila Adam, John, James 0.6
Middle Group (age < 65) Hailey, Cathy, Elizabeth Timothy, Isaiah, Caleb 3.6
Older Group (age ≥65) Tina, Jessica, Jenny Isaac, Joshua, David 8.7
Average Severity 5.1 5.3

Course: Psychology: Health and wellness.
This week’s topic: Personal safety and Environmental Health

Basically you will answer both questions each in 200 words or more if needed. You must use one or more of the articles provided below along with a scholarly source (articles and journals only) for supporting information when answering both questions. In addition, No books are to be used for sources except the class book, if you can locate it which is provided below). Please cite APA in text citation properly for both questions and absolutely no plagiarism.

  1. There has been a transition in environmental concerns from global matters, such as deforestation, ozone, and world population growth, to local concerns, such as indoor air pollution and recycling. Do you believe it is possible to think globally about the environment while acting regionally and locally? Why or why not?

  1. Choose a community program that addresses either violence or unintentional injury. Share a link to a local resources. Discuss the strengths and weakness of the program.

Remember to locate these sources below and use them along with other scholarly sources (articles, journals only. No books for sources) for both questions.

If it also helps and if you locate it feel free to use it as it help with both questions. The class book is: Connect Core Concepts in Health (15th Edition) by: Insel, Roth, & Insel, (2018). California State University Northridge COVID 19 Pandemic Intersectional Analysis

Question Description

Prompt: Covid-19 has not only upended everyone’s lives, but it has also revealed the inequalities that feminist theorists have always written about. In this essay, use one of the essays, “A Primer on Intersectionality” (attached at the bottom) and the “United Nations Policy Brief: The Impact of Covid-19 on Women” ( https://www.unwomen.org/-/media/headquarters/attac… ) from class, and undertake an intersectional reflection of Covid-19 starting from your lives. In other words, how would theorize what you are seeing/experiencing about Covid-19 in terms of class, race, gender, sexuality, citizenship, religion etc.? What is happening in your homes, communities, cities, jobs (or lack thereof)? What is the lockdown doing to gender dynamics around you? How do other intersections show up? Again, this is you analyzing the social, economic and political ramifications of this disease starting from YOUR lives. Let your own data be the launching pad to thinking about the world, as opposed to looking for a reflection of you in the world of ideas.
I live in Los Angeles, CA so when it has to be from my point of view.

HOW IS THE COVID-19 CRISIS AFFECTING URBAN LIFE?

Question Description

HOW IS THE COVID-19 CRISIS AFFECTING URBAN LIFE?
For this paper, you will use news articles and other online sources to research how the COVID-19 crisis is affecting one of three aspects of urban life that we are focusing on during the last half of the course; social interaction and civility in urban spaces, housing and homelessness, and crime and violence. Your goal will be to write a description of trends about your topic, based on the news and information you can find about it, and then discuss how these trends relate to the class readings and materials on your topic.
Sources: I expect that the news media will be an important source for everyone. You could also look at crime reporting data (keeping in mind the dates of social distancing and stay at home orders). Online “communities” like NextDoor or other neighborhood groups might also be good sources, as might local government websites.
I know you will ask me “how many sources do I need”? The true answer is: the more the better and that it also depends on your topic. I understand that you want an answer though, so I will say a minimum of 10 news sources. If your main source ends up being online communities or crime data, then fewer is fine. The key to finding useful sources will be figuring out the best way to search for them. A good way may simply be to search within websites of major newspapers and outlets (like San Francisco Chronicle, LA Times, New York Times, NPR, etc.). Also think about different words to use in searches. For example, googling “civility COVID-19” is not as helpful as searching “neighbors helping COVID-19” (try it and see!). Try to think of different words to use to search for information on your topic. You also might consider limiting your search geographically, so you focus on a specific place (like LA, or California, or wherever you are living now.) Like NewsWatch and Lexis-Nexis, can be extremely helpful for projects like these! Give them a try.
Paper guidelines:
Start with an introduction that includes your argument (or thesis statement, if you prefer) about what trends you are seeing based on the information you have found. Briefly describe the trends in the introduction.
Provide a detailed and organized explanation of the trends you discover in the body of your paper, documenting your sources. At least half of your paper should be devoted to this.
After describing the trends, reflect on how what you’ve found relates to readings and information we’ve covered on the topic. Make sure to discuss at least two different class readings. Summarize information from the readings as needed in order to provide the context needed to connect to your discussion of trends related to COVID-19.
End your paper with a discussion and reflection on what you’ve learned. Are there any predictions you can make, or suggestions for future public policy? If you would like to add any personal reflections based on your experience of sheltering in place, here is where you can do that. Be sure to keep these brief!
Formatting Guidelines:
The paper should be about 6 pages, double spaced, in 12 point font with one inch margins.
Include a references page listing all the materials you used for the paper.
Make sure to reference the different sources you use to support your arguments about trends throughout the paper, as well as any course materials you bring in.
