History of Oman from Tourism and Hospitality Perspective
The Sultanate of Oman is located on the tip of the Arabian peninsula which remained isolated from the rest of the world
till the 1970s. Recently, it is found that the tourism industry in Oman is found to be growing steadily. The main tourist
attraction is the remnants of the old Omani civilization which dates back to the Stone Age and the natural scenic beauty
which prevails in this country. Oman has included in its strategy to preserve its ecological balance while fostering its
economic development through exploiting tourism potential. Mass tourism is a threat to the environment as it
detrimental to Oman’s delicate resources. There is also a threat from the cultural impact due to the interaction of local
people with international tourists which could lead to dilution of values and beliefs of the country. Oman is a tourist
destination with archaeological treasures, natural beauty and unique species of flora/fauna. A carefully charted action
plan is really needed to exploit the business potential while protecting its natural resources and values and beliefs of the
local community.
Based on the opinion of archaeologists about the remnants, it is believed that the trading history of Oman dates back to
at least 8000 years. Omani civilization concentrated on agriculture, fishing and copper mining. The excavations near

Sohar revealed that copper mining and smelters existed 5000 years ago in Oman. The country also had trade relations
with Mesopotamia and India around 200 B.C. on products such as copper, Frankincense (bark of a tree used in aromatic
products which is known as black gold), building materials, and fine marble. This flourishing trade continued till the
middle of nineteenth century when new trade routes and better technologies came into existence making the Omani
ports obsolete. The sea faring nature of the Omanis helped them extend their trade reach far and wide up to Zanzibar
and Mombasa on the African coast to India and Pakistan on the other side.
There are also evidences about Omani traders spreading the message of Islam and the faith as far away as China
(www1.american.edu). The Portuguese intrusion during 1507-1650 in the country showed slow decline in the economy.
Oman was the first to attain the status of an independent state in the Arab world. Oman could not flourish during the
period 1856-1970 unlike its neighbouring counterparts. In 1970, the present Oman came into existence which became
more open to the outside world and the country started setting modernization strategies to reach what it is today. Figure
1 shows the location of Oman in the gulf region.
Importance of Tourism and Hospitality Industry in Oman
Without proper strategy for implementation, it is not wise to expect huge returns from the modern business arena. The
business idea of generating income from tourism as an alternate source of income for Oman is not different. Oman has
already identified other opportunities for revenue and is switching partially from an oil based economy to other sources
of income like that from tourism for its future. The policy of Oman government to start generating income from tourism
has already been laid down and it is needed to shape strategies from time to time to gain full benefit from such initiatives.
Hence the authors feel that the topic is current and is a need of the present and the future.
Guests no longer just seek luxury hotels; they need luxury experiences in every stay
As authorities in Oman work aggressively to boost Oman’s already growing tourism sector as part of the country’s
economic diversification plan, the hotel industry is ready to benefit from the move by expanding its offerings,
particularly in the high-end segment.
The growth of Oman’s hospitality sector, primarily centered around high-end hotels, is driven by a number of factors
including the fact that the sultanate provides one of the safest and most transparent investment environments in the
region.
As per industry captains, foreign investors can easily find avenues to invest in, especially in the tourism sector. The
boost to the sector has also been provided by the country’s recent move to indicate very firmly to the world that it is
investing in the tourism sector for the long term and is determined to achieve the objectives of the 2040 National Tourism
Strategy.
W Muscat Hotel:
“We’re currently looking at a resurgence in Oman’s luxury hotel market that’s being propelled by a number of
international events. As offerings in the sector have increased, so has the demand for luxury services that exceed the
conventional,” said Gerald Chevasson, general manager, W Hotel Muscat.
According to him, “Guests no longer want luxury hotels; they want luxury experiences. People want to be dazzled and
surprised. Personalisation is key and custom itineraries, amenities and individually curated experiences are increasingly
in demand.”

Echoing similar sentiment, Panos Panagis general manager/district director, Radisson Hotel Group Oman, which runs
the Hormuz Grand hotel in Muscat said that there has been a shift in people’s liking.
Whenever, a person steps into a hotel for a vacation or for any other work, he looks for a personalised experience.
Katrin Herz, general manager, Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton hotel said, “There has indeed been an increase in
regional and global demand for luxury tourism, but we have also witnessed a shift in the way luxury hotels are
experienced. We are welcoming more and more multi-generational families who are looking for an all-inclusive
experience, where previously the luxury industry was dominated by elder, wealthy couples.”
New initiatives
The increase in number of hotels in Oman in recent years has also forced operators to adopt new strategies to stay head
of the competition and attract more visitors while keeping profitability intact.
Herz said that while the regional market still makes up a large part of visitors, arrivals from international countries are
steadily growing.
Oman’s government has been making efforts to attract international tourists in line with its goal to achieve 11.7mn
arrivals by 2040.
With the recent opening of the new Muscat International Airport, relaxations in tourist visa rules, Oman’s participation
in major international exhibitions, and the broadening of sports and leisure offerings, the sultanate has immense scope
for increasing international tourism.
On her hotel’s initiative, Herz said, “Since first opening its doors in 1985, the hotel has maintained its reputation as one
of the world’s most luxurious resorts, and as an ultimate destination for prestigious events in Oman.
“A recent renovation has also allowed it to surpass the grandeur of its palatial history and offer next-generation luxury
experiences. Some of our special features include a 1km beach, 200 acres of lush beachfront landscaping, a 50m infinity
pool and four lagoons, and of course the newly opened outdoor family-inspired Aqua Land. Our Six Senses Spa offers
over 3,000sq m meters of facilities right along the beachfront, with a selection of wellness treatments that go beyond
the ordinary.”
The newest addition to Oman’s hospitality sector, the W Muscat, is also taking a host of new steps to boost consumer
experience. Chevasson said, “At W Muscat, we’re breaking the boundaries of luxury. We’re adding life and energy to
the local scene through programming and happenings that celebrate our passion points of music, design, fashion and
fuel.”
On challenges Chevasson said, “We have to constantly move in new directions and we continue to offer the unexpected,
creating distinctive experiences that reimagine the luxury industry.
“As the world becomes more globalised, we have to be pro-active in the ways we attract guests.”
Herz said, “We are keenly encouraging the new generation of young and talented Omanis to join the country’s
burgeoning hospitality industry, to elevating the community, and to supporting the government in its tourism strategy.”

In order to pass the assessment you will need to:
● Demonstrate conceptual understanding of environmental analyses and its role in business management. The
students are also expected to review adequate and relevant contemporary academic literature
● Discuss the important factors of PEST Model while analyzing external environment of Hospitality industry in
Oman and supporting their discussions.
● Evaluate the competition in Hospitality industry in Oman, using porter’s five forces model.
● Exhibit analysis skills by using SWOT model for W Muscat Hotel.
● Students are required to pass in both components in Assessment 1 (Pair assignment + individual viva) as well
as End of Semester Assessment and failing in one component of assessment 1 will result in failing both the
components in Assessment 1.
● In case of re-sit for Pair reports and viva, the referral assessment will always be individual.
● While forming the Pair groups the no. should not exceed 2 students. However, in exceptional cases where
there is odd no. of students there can be a group of 3.
INSTRUCTIONS
Your work will be graded on the following aspects:
1. This assessment carries a 50% weighting of the module grade. It has two components: Pair written Assignment
(35%) and individual viva (15%).
2. Your pair assignment shall reflect the depth and breadth of your original analyses in a clear and coherent manner.
3. Use of the relevant academic literature to support ideas and issues discussed. The range of academic sources such
as texts and journals to support your arguments and comments.
4. Any reference to authors and other writers shall be quoted with due acknowledgement in your assignment report
using the Harvard Referencing System. For details of Harvard referencing style refer the student’s handbook page
44-45 sections 7.2.
5. The cover page should present the following details: Name of the students, The Programme, Module Title,
Assignment Title and number of words must be reflected on the cover sheet.

6. All assignments must adhere strictly to the deadlines specified by Majan College. Failure to hand in the assignment
for any reason and without prior approval and a valid written extension from the module tutor will not be marked
and will be awarded a grade G (0) irrespective of the quality of the work. See student’s handbook page 16 section
4.4.
7. Your report should be word processed and professionally presented. The length of your report should be 2500 words
(+/- 10%), presented in the text of font size 12 with 1.5 line spacing. Please state the exact word count at the end of
the assignment.
8. Unacknowledged use of work of others (plagiarism) is regarded as a dishonest practice and will be penalised. See
the penalties in the student’s handbook page 32 section 5.7.
9. You are required to tick to confirm the statement: “I confirm that this assignment is my own and all sources have
been acknowledged. I understand that the use of other people’s work or ideas without acknowledgement is
plagiarism and could result in failing the assignment”. You will not be able to submit the assignment without ticking
this box.
10. In this pair assignment, it is recommended that the group should identify a leader who can be responsible for
uploading the assignment on Turnitin and to share the feedback received from lecturers with the pair member
Additional Guidelines
1. The Assignment Submission link on MOVE will be open, a week ahead of the submission date.
2. You can submit your assignment multiple times, till the submission deadline. Note that Turnitin could take up
to 24 hours to produce similarity reports for submissions.
3. The last submission, within the deadline, will be considered as your final submission.
4. Assignments should be submitted by 23hrs 58mins on the day of the deadline. There is a grace period until
midnight to allow for any technical difficulties, but any assignments submitted after this will be counted as
late. Technical problems will not be accepted as an excuse for submitting after the day of the deadline.
5. The similarity percentage of your final submission will be one of the factors considered, for assessing the
originality of your assignment. However, the decision to report an assignment for plagiarism is taken by the
Lecturers, who mark your assignment.
6. The Lecturers will consider a number of factors such as Assignment type, Part of the assignment where similarity
occurs, Nature of similarity etc., along with the similarity percentage of your assignment, to assess the originality of

The intention of the proposal is to ensure that the students’ have done sufficient preliminary research in the area of their choice;
have understood and identified the issues/problems of their study; a have proper methodology on how to proceed his/her
research.
Initially, you are required to submit smaller reports as pilot studies and present your research topic in the class. Once the feedback
on that is received a full proposal can be submitted. The first pilot report is about choosing a topic, providing a rationale for the
study and developing your research objectives. The second pilot report involves reviewing and writing a literature review on the
chosen topic.
You are specifically required to undertake the following tasks
Task 1: Submission: 4th week
You are required to choose a researchable topic, give an introduction of the topic, state the rationale/ need for the study and
research objectives.
Task 2: Submission: 8th week
Pilot Report- You are expected to demonstrate your academic knowledge in the chosen area with an appropriate literature
review and correct referencing
Task 3: Presentation: 13
th week — (Weighting 30%)
You are required to present the research topic in the class
Task 4: Submission: 15thweek — (Weighting 70%)

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. The assignment MUST be submitted on-line (through MOVE) on or before the due date.
2. The assignment follows a report format and must be original and creative.
3. This is an individual report which carries 70% and presentation which has 30 % weighting of the module grade.

4. Your assignment shall reflect the depth and breadth of your original analyses in a clear and coherent manner. Use
relevant academic literature to support ideas and issues discussed.
5. Any reference to authors and other writers shall be quoted with due acknowledgement in your report using the Harvard
Referencing System. For details of Harvard referencing style refer https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/a-guide-to-referencing.
6. The assignment should be organized under suitable headings. An analytical piece of work is required. The use of ‘cut and
paste’ approach will be penalized. It must be presented in a structured manner, with appropriate cover page, content
page, introduction, body (with appropriate heading / sub-headings), conclusion, references, page numbered and any
required appendices.
7. Your assignment should be word-processed and professionally presented. The length should be between 2500 words
(+/- 10%), presented in the text of font size 12 with 1.5 line spacing. Please state the exact word count at the end of
the assignment.
8. The cover page should be attached with the assignment and uploaded through MOVE (on-line). Name of the student,
the Programme, Module Title, Assignment Title and number of words must be reflected on the cover sheet.
9. All assignments must adhere strictly to the deadlines specified by Majan College. Failure to hand in the assignment for
any reason and without prior approval and a valid written extension from the module tutor will not be marked and will
be awarded a grade G (0) irrespective of the quality of the work. See Student handbook.
10. Unacknowledged use of work of others (plagiarism) is regarded as a dishonest practice and will be penalized. See the
penalties in the student’s handbook.

Additional Guidelines
• The Assignment Submission link on MOVE will be open, a week ahead of the submission date.
• You can submit your assignment multiple times, till the submission deadline. Note that Turnitin could take up to 24 hours
to produce similarity reports for submissions.
• The last submission, within the deadline, will be considered as your final submission.
• Assignments should be submitted by 6 pm on the day of the deadline. There is a grace period until midnight to allow for
technical difficulties, but any assignment submitted after this will be considered as a late submission. Technical problems
will not be accepted as an excuse for a late submission.
• The similarity percentage of your final submission will be one of the factors considered, for assessing the originality of
your assignment. However, the decision to report an assignment for plagiarism is taken by the Lecturers, who mark your
assignment.

• The Lecturers will consider a number of factors such as Assignment type, part of the assignment where similarity occurs,
nature of similarity etc., along with the similarity percentage of your assignment to assess the originality of your
assignment. Therefore, similarity percentage would not be accepted as a basis for disputing academic judgments
regarding plagiarism.
• Note that the similarity percentage of your submission can change until the submission deadline if the submissions of
other students have similarity to your assignment. Therefore, the similarity percentages are not final, till the assignment
submission is closed.
• You are required to tick to confirm the statement: “I confirm that this assignment is my own and all sources have been
acknowledged. I understand that the use of other people’s work or ideas without acknowledgement is plagiarism and
could result in failing the assignment”. You will not be able to submit the assignment without ticking this box.
• In a case of group work, it is recommended that the group should identify a leader who can be responsible for uploading
the assignment on Turnitin and to share the feedback received from lecturers with the group members.

How does assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?
The research report that has to be developed by the student is based on the topic that is being taught in the class right from the
first unit until the last unit. The first topic discusses the importance of the research, which gives an idea of basic research and the
types of research. The second unit will be discussing how a research topic shod be identified. This is helpfully in identifying the
topic of the research. The third unit is a discussion on literature review, which helps in writing the literature review, which further
includes developing the research questions, aim and objectives of the research. Topic four and five is a discussion on data
collection, scaling, sampling which is a part of the research methodology. The last topic is data analysis tools and techniques,
which is also a part of the research methodology.
