Marks and Spencers

Please develop a management report addressing the four specific tasks set out below. This should be 3,500 words
excluding title and content pages, references and appendices.
A bout ” Marks and Spencers” from 2009 to 2014
As a result of the research, address the following tasks in the management report:
1. Analyse the key changes in the strategic position i.e. external environment and internal environment
(including changes in organisational resources, competences, capabilities, leadership, culture and other internal
aspects such as Plan A strategy).
2. Critically evaluate how well the organisation responded to the external and internal challenges over the
period concerned. Part of your critical evaluation could be a discussion of whether the strategy of M&S
organisation is prescriptive and/or emergent. (hint: link it with customer analysis, Competitor analysis, key
factors of success and the comparative advantage for M&S)
3. Critically discuss the basis and sustainability of the competitive advantage of M&S organisation now and
shareholders.
4. Explain the performance indicator for M&S and review the annual report for the financial result for the
period from 2009 to 2013.
5. Based on the above- develop a range of strategic options available to the organisation to ensure its success
and sustainability into the future. Choose the most appropriate option and consider a range of implementation
issues associated with it. (hint: make recommendation and opinion on how M&S can do better)
Academic writing as third person by the following format:
Contents Section: Include subsections, Page Numbering, Table of Figures and Tables (if present).
Introduction: requires a brief introduction to M&S report including main tasks
Main Body: Should be focused on addressing the discussion and analysis should be supported with careful
definitions
Conclusion and recommendations:
References: in Harvard Referencing Style (there is no need for a separate Bibliography section)
Appendixes: Including Timeline for M&S from 2009 to 2014, charts, Tables.
Very Important Notes:
1. Please NO Wikipedia information, use only credited websites as: M&S corporate, BBC, Financial Times,
Market line, Mintel …
2. Please brand new work (as I faced an issue by this website before about the High similarities with other
student which cased to us both failing on the subject and issue with the website).
3. Please use Sample and normal words as Bachelor degree level.

Leadership and Governance

Assessment item 2—Report
Task Description
Choice of projects
You can do either of the two projects below for your second Assessment item.
1. Report on the relevance or applicability of leadership theories to NGOs.
Much of the research on leadership set for this course and referenced in your text is based on “for profit” enterprises. Your report will discuss the relevance or applicability of leadership theories from your text
to NGOs or Non-Government Organisations. These also sometimes known as Not for Profits.
Within your report, you should:
briefly define and identify the key characteristics of NGOs
compare and contrast leadership practices between NGOs and “for profit” business enterprises.
discuss the application of key leadership theories as they apply to NGOs. You may choose to focus on one or two leadership theories and discuss their relevance in some depth.
It is expected that the research supporting this report will be based on:
leadership theory and practice in general
leadership literature applied specifically to NGOs
A list of academic articles on leadership and culture is provided at the beginning of your Study Guide that might assist you in your search for relevant material, but you are expected to search for additional
relevant academic articles from the library databases. Please keep in mind that not all references provided on Study Guides are consistent with the Harvard style. You must refer to the Harvard Referencing
Guide 2014 (available on Moodle) to ensure that your referencing style is correct.
2. Report based on research on an individual leader
This alternative should only be attempted by students who can personally contact and interview a leader.
Write a report based on an individual case study involving a review of the career of an organisational leader. The research question for this project is: What does it mean to be a leader?
Your task will be to discuss and analyse the nature of that person’s leadership style based onone leadership theory or model that you have chosen. You are required to relate your findings and analyses to
governance within the organisation where data are gathered.
The report will briefly describe the early working life of the person, to develop a sense of why they may have emerged as a leader when they did. This report is not a biographical account of the leader’s life.
You are required to integrate and analyse the biographical information, current leadership activities and leadership data with the relevant literature on leadership.
A major aim of this assessment is the application of leadership theories or models which help you understand leadership in organisations.
In preparation for this assignment:
Be sure to contact the person before the end of Week 2 as this will enable you to prepare early and schedule a time for an interview. Let them know why you want to talk to them and how long you expect it to
take.
Use your textbook and other readings to choose one leadership theory or model, for example, Transformational and Transactional leadership.
Choose a method(s) for data collection based on the chosen leadership theory or model.
NOTE: You must protect the privacy of the leader you are writing about. Do not use the leader’s real name in the report. Also, change the real name of the company you are writing about.
The Leadership Theory or Model
Once you have one leadership theory or model, you must frame this approach to answer the question for investigation. It is important that you make sure you understand precisely how the leadership theory or
model is able to be investigated.
Methods of Collecting Data from the Organisation
Use the interview and/or a questionnaire to collect data from your leader.
In an organisational interview, you are asking leaders in depth about their leadership in the organisation. All interviews are confidential: at the beginning of the interview guarantee to the interviewee that you will
not reveal their name at any point in the analysis or reporting of the result, and keep that promise. Interview questions can be open-ended or close-ended. Open-ended questions allow a participant to discuss a
question or topic freely, without being constrained by structure. Close-ended questions are answered with a yes/no, or a pre-specified response.
Questionnaires provide written responses to questions that address your key topics. Make sure to assure confidentiality for your participant. Use standardised leadership questionnaires from the academic
literature; do not design your own.
Assessment Due Date Week 10 Thursday (08-May-2014) 12:00 PM AEST
The report is due 12:00 noon AEST, Thursday of Week 10
Return Date to Students Week 12 Thursday (22-May-2014)
In general, marked reports will be returned approximately 2 weeks after submission.
Weighting 40%
Assessment Criteria
The assessments in this course will be assessed using norm-based criteria and will also be assessed according to the degree to which you demonstrate the criteria on the Marking Criteria Sheet posted on the
Course Website on Moodle.
The length of the report is 3500 (plus or minus 10% excluding the title page and reference list).
Ensure referencing is consistent with the style shown in the Faculty Guide for students (Harvard-Author Date). A list of academic articles on leadership and culture is provided at the beginning of your Study
Guide that might assist you in your search for relevant material, but you are expected to search for additional relevant academic articles from the library databases. Please keep in mind that not all references
provided on Study Guides are consistent with the Harvard style. You are required to cite a niminum of 12 JOURNAL ARTICLES in your report. You must refer to the Harvard Referencing Guide 2014
(available on Moodle) to ensure that your referencing style is correct.
