Analyzing Amazon

Question Description

Resources: Analyzing Amazon document.
Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper.
The incredible growth of Amazon.com has put fear into the hearts of traditional retailers. Amazon’s stock price has soared to amazing levels. However, it is often pointed out in the financial press that it took the company several years to report its first profit.
Calculate free cash flow for Amazon for the current and prior years.
Evaluate its ability to finance expansion from internally generated cash.
Thus far, Amazon has avoided purchasing large warehouses. Instead, it has used those of others. It is possible, however, that in order to increase customer satisfaction, the company may have to build its own warehouses. If this happens:

  • Describe how your impression of its ability to finance expansion change.
  • Project any potential implications of the change in Amazon’s cash provided by operations from the prior year to the current year.

PRO600 UMUC Amazon Leadership and Teamwork Practices

Project Plan

Directions: Working together with your team, create a shared project plan for completing the white paper and presentation. All team members should contribute their ideas and work in collaboration to develop the agreement. You are welcome to use an external collaborative tool such as a Google Doc if that works for your team. You should modify the document template below to suit your plan.

The plan should divvy up the research into the case study and develop a strategy for writing. Will each member of the team write his/her “piece” to inform the collective paper? Will you draft an outline first? Will each write on a theme? How will all team members contribute ideas, while achieving an integrated work product with a professional unified voice?

Upon completion, distribute a finished copy of the plan to each member. Every member should “electronically” sign the copy. The last person to sign should post a copy with signatures in the team area of the classroom.

The Project Plan
To research the leadership and teamwork practices of Amazon and what aspects of their practices have failed or succeeded.

Discuss how the team will handle research.
Amazon has 14 leadership principles the company believes; each team member could choose two of the principles to research.

Discuss the team’s approach to writing and editing the paper.
Create an outline to discuss first on how the paper will flow.
Each team member will provide an edited version of their research so that once submitted to the team leader the document just needs to be formatted properly and inserted into the paper based off the outline.
Before the final paper is submitted it will be reviewed by the whole team as well as the EWC.

Provide any other planning notes.
Make adjustments to research if current topic is not producing enough information for research.

Question Description

Amazon
Consider the corporation you have selected to use in your first three assignments. Identify one of the firm’s major competitors that you would consider working for.
Research the corporation on its own Website, the public filings on the Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR database (http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml), in the University’s online databases, and any other sources you can find. The annual report will often provide insights that can help address some of these questions.
You will do a 15 minutes presentation to the Board of Directors of the corporation. Develop an eight to twelve slide PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes or record a video based upon Assignments 1 through 4. You may choose to compare your chosen corporation to a major competitor with whom you would like to work. You will make recommendations to the Board of Directors based upon your analysis and decision on why the corporation remains or is not a good fit for you.
Determine the impact of the company’s mission, vision, and primary stakeholders on its overall success as a competitive employer in the industry.
Create a SWOT analysis for the company to determine its major strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
Based on the SWOT analysis, outline a strategy for the company to capitalize on its strengths and opportunities, and minimize its weaknesses and threats.
Discuss the various levels and types of strategies the firm may use to maximize its competitiveness and profitability.
Outline a communications plan the company could use to make the strategies you recommend above known to all stakeholders.
Develop an executive level Power Point presentation with 8 -12 slides with speaker notes and appropriate graphics or professional video.
Assess efforts by this corporation to be a responsible (ethical) corporate citizen and determine the impact these efforts (or lack thereof) have on the company’s bottom line. Provide specific examples to support your response.
