PSY1011 Assignment 2

Assignment 2 (15%): Critical Thinking Exercise – Literature Review
Before you begin… Choose ONE of the topics below!
We encourage you to select the same topic that you did for Assignment 1, however this is not mandatory; the decision is up to you.
TOPIC 1: Personality
Case study… “Emma is 28-years old, and has recently completed her Master in Human Resource Management and is applying for a new job as a HR Services Officer, working for Government. After having her application short-listed, Emma was invited to come in for the first round of interviews. Upon arrival she was presented with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2). Emma is now currently waiting for the next stage of the application process, to see whether she has progressed any further.” With this case study in mind, consider the following research question:
How effective are personality tests in finding a suitable candidate during job recruitment?
Tarescavage, A. M., Brewster, J., Corey, D. M., & Ben-Porath, Y. S. (2014). Use of prehire Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2–Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) police candidate scores to predict supervisor ratings of posthire performance. Assessment, 22(4), 411-428. DOI: 10.1177/1073191114548445
Topics: To take the first steps towards completing this assignment, please only choose one of the four topics listed with starting references. You will then be expected to use the literature search skills that you have obtained during your consultations to find at least seven relevant journal articles to reference as evidence in your literature review. Please note: the topics have been broadened/adjusted slightly since Assignment 1 to make Assignment 2 easier for you.
Case Studies: Please note, the following case studies are fictitious, and are not based on real persons or scenarios. However, we have chosen to highlight issues that are currently present in today’s society whilst also relating them closely to some of your lecture topics and readings.
Remember, these case studies are for illustrative purposes only; please choose one of the following topics and find three articles related to that topic. Do not refer to these case studies in your assignment!
TOPIC 2: Learning
Case study… “Throughout his childhood Steve watched his mother being physically and verbally abused by his father. His mother bore the abuse silently which angered Steve. Occasionally, Steve would also be a victim of his father’s violence. Steve would be spanked and often punished. Steve’s father would always blame Steve and his mother for his violence. As a result Steve is now a bully, has poor concentration, hyperactivity, and a tendency to be aggressive himself.” With this case study in mind consider the following research question:
What is the role of observational learning in domestic and family violence?
Fowler, D. R., Cantos, A. L., & Miller, S. A. (2016). Exposure to violence, typology, and recidivism in a probation sample of domestic violence perpetrators. Child Abuse & Neglect, 59, 66-77. DOI: 10.1016/j.chiabu.2016.07.007
TOPIC 3: Developmental Psychology
Case study… “As a child, Sarah loved hanging out with other boys. During the transition into adolescence, she started to feel uncomfortable in her own skin and didn’t like having to use different bathrooms and change rooms to all of her friends. Her uncomfortableness was particularly amplified during puberty when she started physically developing differently to the other boys. As she became older, she started to learn that what she was experiencing what was known as “Gender Dysphoria”; the struggle between one’s biological sex and their own gender identity. After coming to terms with this at age 16 years, she made the decision to begin the transition from Sarah to Shane.” With this case study in mind consider the following research question:
How can biological factors influence the development of a person’s gender identity?
Luders, E., Sánchez, F. J., Gaser, C., Toga, A. W., Narr, K. L., Hamilton, L. S., & Vilain, E. (2009). Regional gray matter variation in male-to-female transsexualism. Neuroimage, 46(4), 904-907. DOI: 10.1016/j.neuroimage.2009.03.048
TOPIC 4: Cross-Cultural Psychology
Case study… “Zhang is an immigrant from Asia currently studying at a university in Australia. He is having difficulties adjusting to the unfamiliar Western culture due to his cultural values and beliefs, cultural taboos in relation to social behaviour, his previous education system, and his poor English speaking abilities. Zhang is experiencing anxiety, loneliness and depression and has been recommended to see a psychologist for his problems. With this case study in mind consider the following research question:
Evaluate the importance and usefulness of cross-cultural training for health professionals.
Mak, A. S., & Shaw, T. L. (2015). Perceptions of intercultural social challenges: Towards culturally competent counselling practice. Journal of Psychologists and Counsellors in Schools, 25(2), 183-199. DOI: 10.1017/jgc.2015.13
Assignment 2: Critical Evaluation Exercise (15%)
The Critical Evaluation Exercise is the major written task for PSY1011, worth 15% of your final mark for the unit. This year, it will take the form of a 1000 word literature review. Your oral presentation and written summary has been building to this final task. You will receive a mark out of 10 in Moodle for the literature review. Please familiarise yourself with the marking criteria for this assignment (see the “Assessments” section of Moodle). Make sure you are thoroughly familiar with all of the guides and resources available to assist with this assignment.
What are the literature review topics?
The literature review topics are the same as for the Oral Presentation and Written Summary. You do not have to base your assignment on the same topic as Assignment 1, but it is highly recommended. You may use the starting reference previously provided to complete your literature review in addition to at least six other references, otherwise you need to have at least seven brand new references total. These can include the articles you chose to summarise in Assignment 1 IF they are relevant to your overall literature review.
Please note: seven references are the minimum requirement. There is no maximum limit. You are marked on the quality of your work. It is possible that you will require more than seven references to demonstrate the qualities outlined in the marking rubric (i.e. depth of coverage, identifying central issues and concepts) – so aim higher if you can!
Remember to include:
• Title Page (adhering to APA 6th Edition Formatting; use Findlay’s textbook as a guide)
• Introduction
• Body (reviewing recent literature – i.e. 2006 & above)
• Conclusion
• Reference List (adhering to APA 6th Edition Referencing)
The word LIMIT for the literature review is 1000 words (+/- 10%). The title page and reference list are not included in the word count. In-text citations are included in the word count.
What file format should my uploaded file be in?
You must save Assignment 2 Critical Thinking Exercise (Literature Review) as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) file and upload this file for marking. Make sure you keep a copy of your work and back up this copy as well in case we cannot open / read your Word file. If you have followed the process correctly you will see a little Microsoft Word icon (looks like a blue W) beside the name of your saved Word file as it appears at the bottom of this page. If you have a question mark icon beside your file then it is likely that you either did not follow the instructions above and / or you have uploaded a file in the wrong file format, so you should try again.
What if I still need help?!
• Read through the above instructions AS WELL AS the Assignment FAQs on Moodle
• Read through the marking rubric (on Moodle) to know what you are being assessed on
• Attend as many if not all of your Consultations to get the help and guidance you need from your tutor who will be marking your assignment
• Buy or borrow a copy of Bruce Findlay’s textbook “How to write psychology research reports and essays” for further guidance on APA referencing, formatting, and scientific writing within Psychology units
• If you are still stuck, you are welcome to post on your tutor’s discussion forum OR the general discussion forum for further assistance

contemporary issue affecting the hospitality industry

You will write an essay of 2500 words on a contemporary issue
affecting the hospitality industry. This paper will utilise a
minimum of six sources including books, journals and other
scholarly articles, not just trade journals and blogs.
The focus of this course is on professional as well as personal
development. You need to select one topic discussed in class or
choose a topic of your own and ask my permission to write
about it. The purpose of this essay is to enable you to select a
contemporary issue in the hospitality industry and explore it in
depth. Both your topic’s relevance to the current work culture
and the affect this trend will have on your career must be
discussed.
You must summarise the main points of the topic in general,
show insight in the field (i.e. what is it about? how much impact
will it have?), and synthesise other’s thoughts (i.e. does
researcher X’s opinions differ from researcher Y’s opinion?
How is this important?). This will demonstrate to me that you
are aware of the issues involved. Show that you can relate ideas
these to your own professional development.
Assessment Guidance
• Choose a contemporary issue presented in class or discuss
with me any other issue and how you wish to approach it.
• Make a critical assessment of how this issue relates to you
in your professional development and may influence your
career.
• In the paper you must state how this issue is personally
relevant to your future career in the hospitality industry
(ie. when you are in a management position, what will you
do and how will you try to change things?).
• Your references should contain a minimum of six
references, and at least one academic peer-reviewed
journal article (i.e. Journal of Hospitality Research)
where someone has discussed this issue before. More
academic journal references will ensure a higher mark.
Understand what is the DOI number and how it is used.
In the introduction you must present the trend and explain why
it is relevant to the hospitality industry. You should also
mention in one or two sentences what the following sections of
your paper will discuss.
The main body of your work should start with definitions. Do
not use the words ‘Main Body’ as your heading, rather choose
something more specific ( ie. ‘LGBT Trends in Europe’). Use
numbered headings and sub-headings to separate different
sections (ie. 1.0 Introduction; 2.0 Renewable Energy; 2.1 Solar
Power).
Answer these basic questions: why, what, how, when and
where.
• Why is this trend important?
• What are the drivers of this trend that justify these
particular points you discuss?
• Ensure you have clearly set out evidence of how this trend
is affecting the hospitality industry.
• Include at least one important case study to demonstrate
when and where this trend is most pronounced, and
present what this case study found.
The majority of the work should be related to the work of others
from a variety of sources, including books and research papers.
Explore in depth and justify how this impacts the industry.
Please discuss in one short paragraph before the conclusion how
this trend might affect you in your future career. What will be
new or different for you as this trend becomes more
pronounced? Your grade will strongly depend on how you
discuss your future career in relation to the trend you chose to
write about.
You must have a bibliography at the end of your paper, listing
all the references that you mention in the text. Ten references is
a minimum number. Less than 10 will significantly lower your
grade. Be consistent with your bibliography, with author last
name first, then first initial, then title and journal name or book.
The list must be in alphabetical order. Do not use numbering or
bullet points in your reference list. Use the Harvard Referencing
System, which can be found here. Look at any published
research paper as a formatting model for your own work. You
must have at least one reference from a peer-reviewed journal,
such as the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management.
Please upload your paper to the Turnitin link provided on the
Moodle page.
Use this format for naming your file before you upload it: 162
CT H1[/2/3/4] LastName FirstName.
Tips for better writing (click each one to view more)
• The tone of academic writing should be: formal, clear, and
concise. Avoid the 2nd person ‘you’ and 1st person ‘I’ or
‘we’ in academic writing (only use ‘I’ in your personal
reflection section).
• Use numbered headings and sub-headings to help the
reader, in statement form, NOT as questions (do not use
the words: how, why, or what). The same for your title,
do not have a question as your title.
• Number your headings ie.: 1.0 Introduction; 2.0 Solar
Energy; 2.1 Solar Energy in Switzerland; 3.0 Personal
Reflection; 4.0 Conclusion.
• Do not use colloquial language (ie. ‘a lot’; ‘really’; ‘like’; or
‘actually’) use instead ‘many’ or ‘similar to’.
• Have a look at this website from Newcastle University on
academic writing
• Everyone must use an online grammar checker before you
submit such as Grammarly, Grammarcheck, or Ginger
grammar. Use of correct grammar will be a significant
part of your grade.
• You must have at least one reference from a peerreviewed
journal. More references from academic journals
will be an advantage. The reference list must be in Harvard
style. The best website for this is Citethisforme.com.

Introduction
Currently, Dubai is one of the most developed and yet the fastest developing city in the globe given its strategic location, unmatched hotels, infrastructures, remarkable architecture and world-class entertainment and sporting events. The drivers of this city success can be attributed to the success of its economic sectors such as tourism, aviation industry and as a trade hub as it acts as central market for the West and East due to its strategic location. Aviation industry for instance has played a fundamental role in the development and growth of the UAE economy in general and as such, the UAE government has invested hugely in order to expand the industry. The industry has been instrumental in aiding the government on its diversification efforts so that the UAE economy can stop relying on oil only as the only source of income. Today, the aviation industry represents one of sector which is generating highest revenues in UAE, and according to recent reports, revenues generated in the sector surpassed those generated in the oil sector which for years has been the main contributor of the UAE’s national income.
In order to sustain this unprecedented growth and expand it more, the government of UAE has new strategies which aim to develop and redevelop the existing infrastructure so that they can accommodate the ever increasing demand of services in the sector. The Emirate of Dubai also has a vision that resonates to above sentiments and they have for years, since 1960, developed the Dubai International Airport to become among the largest and the busiest international airport around the globe. The Airport serves over 66 million people annually and operates to more than 260 destinations worldwide. This report aims to analyze the Dubai International Airport and reflect on relevant aspects such as physical environment of its airside and landside including the terminal and ground access to the airport. Being one of the fastest developing airports around the globe, the report will shed light on how the airport infrastructures and the general planning (airside and landside), facilitates smooth delivery of services in the port.
Airside/ airfield components
They are physical facilities installed in the airport to facilitate the day to day operations of the port such as aircraft operations and other support services to easy the movement in the airport.
Runways
The longest runway in the airport is the 12R/30L which is 13127 ft (4001m) long which is designed in high standards to ensure safe departs and arrivals and it is marked in white to facilitate visibility. The other runways are also marked in white and they are several of them which are classified under the following categories;

  • Parallel runways
  • Cross wind runways
  • Dependent or independent runways
  • Primary runways
  • Secondary runways.

Dubai international Airport Dubai International Airport uses two parallel runways 12R/30L is 4,450 m × 60 m (14,600 ft × 200 ft), 12L/30R is 4,000 m × 60 m (13,120 ft × 200 ft),its contains four sets of ILS  , the runways were expanded to accommodate the Airbus A380 which came into service in 2007. Runways consist of many parts which are structured to facilitate aircraft departure and arrival and these parts include;

  • Runway Shoulders, designed to provide a space between the runway, signage, lighting systems, and the pavements
  • Runway safety areas are areas surrounding the runway to reduce risk of damage to airplanes in undershoot or overshoot
  • Runway protection zone are trapezoidal area which are 200 ft and are situated beyond a runway extending up to 2500 ft, designed to enhance protection on the ground
  • Designator, it identifies a runway’s name and its orientation

The airport has two types of runway pavements:

  • Flexible (asphalt) which is designed to last between 15 to 20 years
  • Rigid (concrete) which is designed to last for 20-40 years

Taxiways
Taxis are a general phenomenon in airport as they offer support services to easy movement over the expansive area serving the different airport departments. Following are different types of taxiways in Dubai Airport:

  • Parallel taxiways which are given alphabetical designators since they are aligned adjacent to runways
  • Entrance taxiways, which are located almost at the end of departure runways and serve those, are traveling to various regions
  • Bypass taxiways, located at different points especially the congested areas to facilitate and easy movement
  • Exit taxiways which are located at various points along the runways
  • Rapid exit taxiways which are high speed exit

Following are some of the markings on taxi ways:

  • Designators, named alphabetically to identify the taxiway
  • Center line which is a single line which ranges 6-12 inches in width
  • Edge markings which are double continuous lines
  • Runway holding position marking which separates different types of taxiways
  • Taxiways shoulder marking, represented by yellow lines running perpendicular to the centerline of the taxiway

Airfield lighting, marking and signage
Airfield lighting are installed in any airport to ensure safe depart, arrival and also to help during night time and when there is poor weather conditions and low visibility which may be brought by the fog or smoke at the airport. All commercial aviation airports are equipped with these types of lighting systems to illuminate runways as described above so that pilots can be able to maintain the aircraft on its runway when it is arriving or departing. Following are types of lightings which are prevalent in major airports and also in Dubai International Airport;

  • Runway lightings
  • Taxiway lighting
  • Approach lighting systems

Marking
The different lights installed are of different colors, following are some of marking indicated by the lights used in runways and other ways in Dubai Airport:
Runway edge lights are all white except the instrument runways lights which are yellow in color
Red lights, indicates the end of the a runway for a departing aircraft
Green lights, indicates the threshold to a landing aircraft
Taxiway leadoff lights are green and yellow in color and they start from the runway centerline all the way to runway holding position
Visual Approach Slope Indicator lights (VASI) are red or white
Signs and technologies used in airport for low visibility
The airport has installed different types of signs to aid different users of the various runways throughout the airport; following are some of the signs in the Dubai’s airport; mandatory instruction signs, location signs, destination signs, information signs and runway distance remaining signs.
Mandatory instructions signs usually has a red background with a black outlined white inscription and they are used to indicate an entrance to a runway or critical area and they are of different type which includes; runway holding position signs, runway approach area holding position signs, ILS critical holding position and no entry signs.
Location signs help to locate a taxiway or a runway in which the aircraft is located and they include the following; taxiway location sign, runway location sign, runway boundary signs, ILS critical area boundary signs among others. On the other hand, direction locations are indicated by a yellow background with a black inscription usually located at the left before an intersection. Information signs are usually painted with a yellow background with black inscription and they usually guides pilots on areas that are not visible from the control tower. The other runway signs have a black background with a white numeral inscription along one or both sides of a runway and are also used by pilots.
Technology used at the airfield for low-visibility operations like landing aids
Follow the Green Concept
To manage all safety aspects especially in low visibility conditions, the Dubai Airports launched an Advanced Surface Movement Guidance Control System (ASMGCS) program, whereby the first phase of the program was completed in 2012 with the implementation of MLAT to supplement primary radar coverage. Phase 2 which were implemented last year (2016) and included installation of an innovative Ground Traffic Management (GMT) system that also, utilizes the Green Concept which was validated by airline pilots in 2013 at aircrafts trials at Frankfurt Airport under sponsorship of SESAR joint Undertaking. The DXB innovative Ground Traffic Management is the first system with enhanced surveillance, automated routing and guidance, control and planning functionalities to be deployed operationally around the globe.
Landside
Location of Airport and the No. of Terminals
Dubai International Airport serves the largest city within the UAE and also as a unique aviation hub within the Middle East and also lit is the country’s main airport as it is the largest of all the airports in the different emirates.
