Development is sometimes seen as an essential ingredient to ensuring a safer, more secure world. The proposed mechanisms by which development brings about security are: political stability, economic opportunity, and respect for human dignity and rights.
As we have discussed in class, the new model for development is the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As much as a landmark as the SDGs are, they are not perfect. Too broad, overambitious, non-binding, too complex critics will say. The purpose of this paper is to analyze under what conditions the SDGs could effectively create development conditions which reduce security threats worldwide.
In this paper, discuss:

  • how development might stem insecurity;
  • under what conditions the SDGs can realize the sort of development needed to stem security threats, if at all, taking into consideration the various sources of insecurity.

Specific instructions:

  • Five double spaced pages maximum, 12-point Times New Roman font, one inch margins;

How would you use the same idea of specific and achievable goals to think about changes in policy or society in relation to sustainability? Specifically:
1.Justify the relevance of Kennedy’s statement with respect to the UN SDGs with specific references to the role of governments and private corporations.
2.Identify two of the SDGs that you consider important (as they relate to either your local community or to your core values). With the two selected SDGs, evaluate the interdependence of those goals while considering how the funding needs and action plans for the goals are interconnected.

The objective of the Presentation is to communicate your findings. This final piece of the
assignment series emphasizes communication, challenging you to convey the key
aspects of your Case Study in a team “lightning talk”: a concise and compelling oral and
visual presentation. Each member of the team must prepare and deliver a portion of the
final Presentation
• Your team has 7 minutes to present. This is a strict time limit.
• You must use PowerPoint format slides (pptx).
• You must attend all classmates’ presentations and take notes during classmates’
presentations in order to share feedback
Steps / Suggestions
1. Plan your presentation carefully. Make sure to deliver your analyses and ideas for
improvement.
2. Design your presentation to be compelling. Why should people care about this
problem? What is interesting about this intervention?
3. Make your slides in order to reinforce and be additive to your argument. DO NOT
have a bunch of text that is the same as what you are saying. Eliminate extraneous
noise.
4. Practice your presentation several times. Memorize your outline structure. Don’t rely
on a word-for-word script.
5. Practice your voice tone, volume and speed.
6. Practice confident and comfortable body language and eye contact with your
audience. Try practicing in the mirror.
