Differentiating Between Market Structures

You will apply important microeconomics concepts toward the competitive strategies of an organization that operates in an industry of your choice. You will evaluate the differences between market structures and identify a group of competitive strategies consistent with the market structure that best aligns with the market in which the organization competes. You will assess how the market structure positively and negatively affects the firm and evaluate the efficacy of the structure”s competitive strategies.

  • Identify an organization in that industry: Apple

  • Identify the market structure in which this organization competes: Tablets ( IPad, Tablets, etc)

Clearly indicate why the market structure was decided upon, and how this market structure differentiates from the other alternatives.

  • How might the company you selected find itself working with organizations (Samsung) in the same industry that are an oligopoly, perfect competition, monopoly, or monopolistic market structure. Examine the different sectors with an industry and how market structure may vary within those sectors.

  • Identify three or more competitive strategies of your choice that may be used by the organization to maximize its profits over the long run.

  • Evaluate the efficacy of these strategies in the market structure you identified. Make recommendations related to the strategies the organization might consider to maximize its profits.

Environmental Issues

The goal of this assignment is to apply an ethical theory to a real-world situation. You will examine an environmental issue, and apply one of the ethical theories to understand how human interactions with the natural environment raise ethical concerns. You will do this by preparing and posting a PowerPoint slideshow.

  1. Choose one of the following topics/issues and read about it at the indicated place:
    • Environmental justice/environmental racism (Article: Environmental Justice for All)
    • Environmental harm/pollution of air and water (Chapter 8 in the textbook)
    • Waste reduction (Chapter 8 in the textbook)
  2. Select one philosophical theory (utilitarianism, deontology, or virtue ethics). Consider the following questions pertaining to the theory you have selected:
    • What does the theory tell us about how things operate in the real world?
    • What is the focus of the theory? That is, what aspects of everyday life does the theory address? Another way to think about this is to consider what question(s) the theory is addressing?
    • The focus (or questions) help you think about the topical boundaries of the theory―this course is about ethics and social responsibility and you should concentrate on the ethical and moral aspects of the theory and of the topic you are analyzing. It may help to think in terms of different realms or institutions―does the theory help to explain people”s behavior from a political perspective? From an economic perspective? From a religious perspective? From an ethical perspective? Try to sort through everything that does not represent an ethical question, and address only the ethical issues.
    • How does the theory simplify complex issues to make them more understandable? Another way to think about this is to consider what the elements―or concepts―that make up the theory are. Identify the concepts and how they are related to each other.
  3. Develop one thesis question that applies your philosophical theory to your environmental issue. You will address this question in developing an argument that links the theory to the issue (through your notes and pictures), so make sure you word your question carefully to accomplish this task.
  4. Develop an argument that addresses your question. Build your argument by writing nine sentences. Each sentence should make one important point about the ethical aspects of the environmental issue you are analyzing and will be placed on one slide each. Make sure your argument focuses on ethical arguments, and avoids personal opinion, or arguments based on politics, economics, religion, or topics other than ethics.
  5. Create a PowerPoint slideshow to present your argument. Begin by inserting your argument into the slideshow using the Notes feature at the bottom of each slide. Click on the box that says Click to add notes and type one sentence at the bottom of each slide. Your sentences and slides should link together to form your argument.
  6. Find photos to illustrate each sentence, and post the photo on the slide above the note. You can use your own personal photos or can search the internet for photos that are appropriate. Make sure the photos are not protected from copying; you should only use photos that are in the public domain. Cite the sources from which you get your photos underneath the photo on each slide.

Film Analysis

Movies, television shows, and books often play a role in shaping the way we look at the world.  Fiction or non-fiction, they can teach us about important social issues, make us see something from a new perspective, or give us insight into lives and experiences that are not our own. This is precisely our focus for Project Text.
Project Requirements:

  • Annotated Bibliography ” Rough Draft (2 sources) due Nov. 17, Final Draft (4 sources) due Nov. 26
  • Individual Essays (1200 words) ” Rough Draft  due Nov. 17, Final Draft  due Nov. 26

The Essay

Directions: For this essay, you will choose a film, a television series, or a book, and analyze its connection to a social issue or its influence on a particular aspect of society.
The following is a list of questions to get you started.  You are not limited to these questions.  They are just to get you thinking. Feel free to come up with your own issues and ideas to write about in connection with your chosen media (film, tv, or book).
Questions to Consider:

  • Does the film/book/tv show deal with a social issue?
  • In what way does it connect to the social issue?
  • What does that say about how we view that issue in society?
  • Discuss the qualities that make this particular work noteworthy, and/or discuss its negative aspects.  Are there specific scenes, characters, or observations that go against particular stereotypes?
  • Does this work influence the audience positively or negatively? In what specific ways?

Examples:  Our class readings—Juno: Not Just Another Teen Movie by Ali Heinekamp, Undocumented Lives: Migrant Latinos in America (textbook, page 260), Lost: Making Viewers into Critical Thinkers by Daniel Shevelin, Superheroes Not So Super by Alejandro Anguiano (Wings pg. 17), Twilight: Harmless Fantasy or Dangerous Obsession? by Amanda Morrison, Degrassi and its Influence on Teens by Luz Prado
Requirements:

  1. 1200 words minimum, typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font in Times New Roman and 1 margins.
  1. Your essay must include a thesis that makes a claim about the text (film, book, show) you are analyzing and how it connects to a social issue.
  2. Your essay must follow MLA format and must correctly cite all sources it uses (see the example in your textbook and the handout).

Other RequirementsYour assignment should be at least 2 pages (600 words). You should include citations for your source(s). Use this exercise as an opportunity to improve your MLA skills. If you include quotations from the original text, make sure they are short quotations (no more than 3 lines long).  You can also save the citations for this assignment and use them in the Annotated Bibliography.
The Annotated Bibliography
The Annotated Bibliography will be comprised of at least 4 sources in MLA works cited format.  This means that you will have a correctly formatted citation for 4 sources you have found in your research.  Beneath each citation, you need to write a short paragraph that briefly:
”          Summarizes the source
”          Discusses where/how you found the source
”          Gives the reasons the source is credible/reputable
”          Explains how it will be relevant to your topic and useful in your paper.

Example: This is one sample entry in an annotated bibliography:
Booker, Joe. Homelessness in LA: A Growing Trend, Trends in Society Journal. 12.2.(2006): 5-6. Print.

This article discusses how homelessness has increased by 50% in the Los Angeles area over the past 5 years, and how factors such as mental illness, economics, and racist and classist zoning of houses and apartments has affected these numbers. I found this argument using the Lexis-Nexis search engine, accessed through CSUN Oviatt Library.  I searched for homelessness in Los Angeles and found this article after looking through my search results. It is a peer-reviewed article from a respected journal, so I knew it was both academic and trustworthy. This article will be relevant to my essay because it provides some useful statistics that I will cite as support when I discuss homelessness as a persistent problem in our society that shows the growing gap between the very rich and the very poor. I will then connect this to the huge gap between the wealthy Capitol citizens and the impoverished workers who live in the districts, and discuss how The Hunger Games can be seen as commentary on the wealth gap in our own society.
