Pay for Performance in Healthcare

Pay for Performance in Healthcare
Submit a carefully researched, and thoughtfully analyzed, paper that addresses the following:
What is ?Pay for Performance? in health care?
What?s good about it?
What?s bad about it?
Show me that you understand the problem, and that you can bring to bear some of the material covered in this course. Design your arguments so that a reader who might disagree with you would still recognize the intelligence of the author. I?m looking for your considered opinion, based upon your research and your analysis; not simply a conglomeration of sources pasted together.
The paper should be 1,100 words in length. You will find that this is quite short, for treatment of this topic; so it is important to focus your statements, and make each word count. I always emphasize to students that they should evaluate their sources. Until you have gained great personal experience with the relevant literature, it is safest to stick to articles that appear in the most reputable peer-reviewed journals. I would suggest the following group of sources (certainly not exhaustive, but likely adequate for this assignment). You will find that articles initially much too technical for undergraduate students become less intimidating as your research progresses:
American Journal of Preventive Medicine
American Journal of Public Health
Annals of Internal Medicine
Annual Review of Public Health
British Medical Journal
Harvard Business Review
Health Affairs
Health Care Financing Review
Health Care Management Review
Health Services Research
Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health
Journal of Health Economics
Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law
Journal of the American Medical Association

Write a persuasive essay that defends your ranking of the seven social sciences. Use specific facts and details from your personal experiences and reading to support your point of view. Review the Grading Assignment Rubric and the Persuasive Essay sheet before writing your essay.

Getting Started
As you write your persuasive essay, you are trying to capture the reader”s interest and ask for help in solving a problem. The goal is to get the reader to accept your point of view using at least six examples of facts, details, real personal experiences, or fictitious illustrations in the assignment.

You will need to focus your persuasive essay on three areas. First, you must identify the problem or point of view for your reader. You may need to use facts, details, and real life examples or create fictitious illustrations that show the problem. Next, you need to offer a solution or a summary of your point of view.

In true persuasive writing, you don”t just stir up the audience; you offer a way for them to become involved in solving the problem or to convince them of your position. Finally, you call for action. You want your reader to believe as you do and to offer support, either emotionally or physically.

Make sure you have topic sentences with transitions to help guide the reader along to the next paragraph!

Your 5 Paragraph Essay should be organized like this:

I.  Introduction: list the 7 different Social Sciences and state which one you believe is most important and which is the least important, based on YOUR OWN PERSONAL experiences, opinions and beliefs.  Make sure you have a THESIS STATEMENT that lays out the basic argument of your essay.

Sample Thesis Statement: In my own experience, I have found that HISTORY is the most important of the Social Sciences, because it provides us with a framework to combine together things like anthropology, which is slightly less important and sociology, which is even less important, only because people and societies change so much and vary from one culture to the next.

II. Least Important Social Science
A. Example, Supporting fact, incident or statistic
B. Example, Supporting fact, incident or statistic
III. More Important Social Sciences
A. Example, Supporting fact, incident or statistic
B. Example, Supporting fact, incident or statistic
IV. Most Important Social Science
A. Example, Supporting fact, incident or statistic
B. Example, Supporting fact, incident or statistic
V. Conclusion: based on what you”ve just argued about which Social Sciences are more important than others, what should be done about this?  What recommendations do you make for students, teachers, politicians and society as a whole?
