Saint Louis Community College Global Citizen Report

  • Objectives of the Assignment

The purposes of this assignment are:

  • to teach you about an important contemporary, complex, global, multi-disciplinary environmental issue;
  • to give you practice researching a subject independently (outside the classroom);
  • to give you practice working in a team setting;
  • to give you experience making decisions based on a body of (sometimes conflicting) evidence and opinions – see also the last section of this document;
  • to give you practice with effective written communication;
  • to help you gain knowledge of global and cultural systems and issues;
  • to help you gain the ability to develop and/or apply context-appropriate actions to address global and cultural issues or situations;
  • to help you develop the ability to identify and describe major global issues; and
  • to help you develop the ability to weigh options, evaluate planned actions, and/or formulate possible solutions when addressing global issues or situations

  1. Description of the Global Citizens Assignment

Hints: Answer the question that is asked of you. Make sure that you have a clear and coherent point of view, that your point of view addresses the question that was asked, and that a reader can easily discern your point of view. Make sure that you support your point of view with evidence and sound reasoning.  Document your assertions with appropriate professional references.
Question 1. In 2015 all 193 member states (including the U.S.) of the United Nations adopted 17 goals (referred to as the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs).  The SDGs provide a framework for the world to assess their progress to achieve a more sustainable future for everyone (the period is 2015-2030).  The 2019 U.S. Cities Sustainable Development Report (Sustainable Development Solutions Network) provides information that measures the performance of U.S. cities to achieve the SDGs.  The report argues that “America’s cities are home to more than 80 percent of Americans and around 85 percent of U.S. production. They will determine the future of sustainable development in the United States.”
As you read the report you will see there are many examples of progress made by U.S. cities in meeting the SDGs; however, there are also challenges facing U.S. cities.  Are U.S. cities on track to achieve the SDGs?   How do U.S. cities compare to European Cities?  Why does the rest of world care about the U.S.’s progress in meeting the SDGs. Explain and justify your answer with evidence and reasoning.

  1. Guidelines for Report Preparation

There is no set length requirement for this assignment, but at most of the reports will end up being approximately 5-10 pages (double spaced). The maximum allowable length is 12 pages (not including references).
It is recommended to include figures or tables if these figures and tables make your discussion easier to understand.  It is important you only use work of others that is in the public domain (unless you are able to obtain official permission).  You cannot use figures or tables that are copyrighted (i.e., owned) by an individual or publisher without their permission.
Format should follow guidelines provided by ASCE at the following web site.
https://ascelibrary.org/doi/10.1061/9780784479018.ch05

  1. Plagiarism

Your assignment will be run through plagiarism software. If you are not aware of ethical reasons why you should not plagiarize the work of others, please read this discussion “Republishing without credit raises ethical and legal questions.” https://www.asce.org/question-of-ethics-articles/oct-2017/ If it is discovered that your final report contains any plagiarism, all group members will receive zero credit for the assignment. That is likely to have a significant negative impact on your semester grade.  It is in your individual interest to make sure that your group members do not engage in plagiarism.

Company: BCBS of Michigan (a reference to BCBS Association can be made as well)

If the impact has been primarily negative, what are the positive aspects in addition to the negative aspects?
