What follows is the final paper for this course in lieu of a final exam. The purpose of this paper is
to test your ability to apply the concepts we have been exploring all semester to ‘real-world’
phenomena. I have left the guidelines for this paper relatively loose intentionally; I decided that
this will give you the creative flexibility to explore the topic as you please. Remember that this
assignment should be treated as a final exam- that is, you are working on it alone. I appreciate
that many of you took the time to reach out and get feedback before the submission of your
annotated bibliography, however due to the aforementioned placement of this assignment as an
‘exam,’ I will not provide feedback on papers prior to submission. You have 5 days to complete
this assignment. My deadline is firm.
INSTRUCTIONS
Given that we are currently experiencing what are undoubtedly the most profound events of our
lifetime, it only makes sense to unpack it sociologically. You may ask ‘but how?’ Well, this is
your task for the final paper: You will analyze EITHER Covid-19 (or rather, society and
Covid-19) OR The Racial Justice Movement (and its relation to society). READ THIS
AGAIN: you will pick ONE of those two options and unpack it using the three main
theoretical paradigms we have explored in every topic throughout the course: Structural
Functionalism, Symbolic Interactionism, and Conflict theory. You will then make the case
as to which method of sociological inquiry is most appropriate in these times and why. To
explore each lens of sociological analysis, you will first outline how the theoretical paradigm
approaches analysis (hint: you will need to cite the textbook to explain how the theoretical
paradigm focuses its analysis) and then you will provide an argument as to how one would
analyze Covid-19 or the Racial Justice Movements using this lens, by using some examples of
this in your own life and/or the world around you in the current circumstances. For the last piece
(the conclusion), you simply need to make a case for which perspective you believe is the most
appropriate and why (hint: be specific, support your claims with evidence and examples, there is
not a right answer here, but you should convince me that there is). You can (but do not need to)
bring in sources outside of the textbook. The assignment is a minimum of 1000 words, and
must follow proper ASA OR APA guidelines (title page + reference page, in-text citations, no
plagiarism etc). Scroll down to page two of this document for a brief outline of how I would
format this tremendous and fun assignment if I was the one writing it in an intro sociology
course. Again, you will pick EITHER of these social phenomena and you must unpack THAT
phenomena through each lens. DO NOT SWITCH BETWEEN TOPICS.
LOOSE OUTLINE OF FUN AND TREMENDOUS ASSIGNMENT
Although it may be counter-intuitive, I am not even requiring an introduction page- just
cut to the chase. Subheadings are required at the beginning of each theoretical
perspective. Below is my assignment logic.
TITLE PAGE
Theoretical perspective number 1 (subheading, 250 words)
– first quarter to half of the page, clearly outline how the theoretical perspective
analyzes a social phenomena.
– Second, apply this lens to Covid-19 or the Racial Justice movement using
examples of your own life or the world around you.
Theoretical perspective number 2 (subheading, 250 words)
– first quarter to half of the page, clearly outline how the theoretical perspective
analyzes social phenomena.
– Second, apply this lens to Covid-19 or the racial justice movements using
examples of your own life or the world around you.
Theoretical perspective number 3 (subheading, 250 words)
– first quarter to half of the page, clearly outline how the theoretical perspective
analyzes social phenomena.
– Second, apply this lens to Covid-19 or the racial justice movement using
examples of your own life or the world around you.
Conclusion (subheading, 250 words)
– Which lens do you find most convincing and why? This is pretty straight forward
(Hint: it will help you to look at the textbook to illustrate the limitations of each
sociological perspective as well as the strengths)
Reference page
ONE MORE TIME: YOU WILL PICK EITHER OF THESE TWO SOCIAL PHENOMONA. WHEN YOU
PICK ONE, YOU MUST USE IT FOR ALL THREE LENSES OF ANALYSIS

Worshipping During COVID 19 Essay

Question Description

Your ethnography paper should take a big picture look at a people group you know little about. This assignment should stretch you; perhaps it will even make you feel a bit uncomfortable. That’s OK. Your paper will will be graded based on the following criteria:
1. Subject matter. Did the student go above and beyond to observe a group the student does not currently understand. Did the author observe for no less than two hours?
2. Interpretation. Did the student think critically to develop a “big picture” interpretation about the subject based solely on the observation.
3. Illustration. Did the student back up their interpretation through vivid and coherent illustrations?
4. Organization. Is the paper written with an “attention-getting” hook? Does the paper have a clear thesis that lays out the paper. Are the body paragraphs written using the topic sentence format? Is the paper grammatically and mechanically correct? *The topic would be observing people in a worship place during covid-19

Sex Education COVID-19 Paper

ONLINE SEX EDUCATION LEARNING

ASSIGNMENT:  Generally speaking, what effect do you think the coronavirus will have on relationships in general and sexual activities in particular?
Thoughts for your consideration:

  • Your paper will be 200 words or less (less than 1 ½ pages).
  • You will be graded on Originality, English grammar and Content.
  • Originality– I want to know what you think, not somebody else. Many people may be tempted to google materials, find something they think is interesting, copy and use it.  No, no, no. You too have a brain—and you should not “underestimate” yourself or your ideas.
  • English Grammar – You are college students! Your work should reflect it.  After all, I’m not asking you to spell “epididymis.”  Andsome of you did!  You should use all of the word processing tools available to you (edit, spelling, and thesaurus). I’m not looking for a Pulitzer Prize winner, but good, basic, English grammar.
  • Content – What are you saying? Does it make sense?  Are you using facts (are you using some of the facts that we know about the coronavirus in your paper, how about safe sex/toys, how about people who live together being forced to spend more time face-to-face, etc)?  Are you making good, solid, points?

You may consider and include some of the following points in your paper:

  • Will there be a birth explosion 9 months from now or will there be more than usual the number of breakups. Will we see more coronavirus babies than COVID – 19 breakups?
  • Will sexually active people (or will they become abstinent during this period) have more or less sex? How about if they live together? What if they don’t?
  • Will people use alternative sexual practices more if they are not engaged in physical sexual contact (sex toys, virtual sex, masturbation, etc.)?

Before you begin:

  • Take a couple of days to think about the subject before you do anything,
  • As ideas come forth, jot them down in a notebook, pad, etc.,
  • After several days and after you’ve decided “which way you want this thing to go,” begin writing,
  • Remember, that your first paragraph will be a snapshot of your entire paper,
  • Read your paper to a family, friend, partner (after all, you don’t have that much else to do being socially-distanced as we all are) and incorporate their ideas—only, if you agree!

And Remember:

  • If we ever have class again, I’ll ask you to read your paper in front of the whole class,
  • If not, well then, you can read it to your kids, family, and friends when you tell them about the coronavirus that happened in 2020!!!!!!!
