California State University Northridge COVID 19 Pandemic Intersectional Analysis

Question Description

Prompt: Covid-19 has not only upended everyone’s lives, but it has also revealed the inequalities that feminist theorists have always written about. In this essay, use one of the essays, “A Primer on Intersectionality” (attached at the bottom) and the “United Nations Policy Brief: The Impact of Covid-19 on Women” ( https://www.unwomen.org/-/media/headquarters/attac… ) from class, and undertake an intersectional reflection of Covid-19 starting from your lives. In other words, how would theorize what you are seeing/experiencing about Covid-19 in terms of class, race, gender, sexuality, citizenship, religion etc.? What is happening in your homes, communities, cities, jobs (or lack thereof)? What is the lockdown doing to gender dynamics around you? How do other intersections show up? Again, this is you analyzing the social, economic and political ramifications of this disease starting from YOUR lives. Let your own data be the launching pad to thinking about the world, as opposed to looking for a reflection of you in the world of ideas.
I live in Los Angeles, CA so when it has to be from my point of view.

HOW IS THE COVID-19 CRISIS AFFECTING URBAN LIFE?

Question Description

HOW IS THE COVID-19 CRISIS AFFECTING URBAN LIFE?
For this paper, you will use news articles and other online sources to research how the COVID-19 crisis is affecting one of three aspects of urban life that we are focusing on during the last half of the course; social interaction and civility in urban spaces, housing and homelessness, and crime and violence. Your goal will be to write a description of trends about your topic, based on the news and information you can find about it, and then discuss how these trends relate to the class readings and materials on your topic.
Sources: I expect that the news media will be an important source for everyone. You could also look at crime reporting data (keeping in mind the dates of social distancing and stay at home orders). Online “communities” like NextDoor or other neighborhood groups might also be good sources, as might local government websites.
I know you will ask me “how many sources do I need”? The true answer is: the more the better and that it also depends on your topic. I understand that you want an answer though, so I will say a minimum of 10 news sources. If your main source ends up being online communities or crime data, then fewer is fine. The key to finding useful sources will be figuring out the best way to search for them. A good way may simply be to search within websites of major newspapers and outlets (like San Francisco Chronicle, LA Times, New York Times, NPR, etc.). Also think about different words to use in searches. For example, googling “civility COVID-19” is not as helpful as searching “neighbors helping COVID-19” (try it and see!). Try to think of different words to use to search for information on your topic. You also might consider limiting your search geographically, so you focus on a specific place (like LA, or California, or wherever you are living now.) Like NewsWatch and Lexis-Nexis, can be extremely helpful for projects like these! Give them a try.
Paper guidelines:
Start with an introduction that includes your argument (or thesis statement, if you prefer) about what trends you are seeing based on the information you have found. Briefly describe the trends in the introduction.
Provide a detailed and organized explanation of the trends you discover in the body of your paper, documenting your sources. At least half of your paper should be devoted to this.
After describing the trends, reflect on how what you’ve found relates to readings and information we’ve covered on the topic. Make sure to discuss at least two different class readings. Summarize information from the readings as needed in order to provide the context needed to connect to your discussion of trends related to COVID-19.
End your paper with a discussion and reflection on what you’ve learned. Are there any predictions you can make, or suggestions for future public policy? If you would like to add any personal reflections based on your experience of sheltering in place, here is where you can do that. Be sure to keep these brief!
Formatting Guidelines:
The paper should be about 6 pages, double spaced, in 12 point font with one inch margins.
Include a references page listing all the materials you used for the paper.
Make sure to reference the different sources you use to support your arguments about trends throughout the paper, as well as any course materials you bring in.

INTL 102 University of California Discrimination in COVID

INTL102 Final Presentation

From syllabus:  Students will complete an 8-10 page reflexive paper applying lessons learned throughout the quarter about thinking and writing reflexively. That is, asking yourself WHY, why, why,  you are interested in this topic, and how your own life experiences, background, values, and so forth influence your understanding.

Students will pick an identity-based conflict to organize their paper around. The main questions they will answer in this paper are: What makes this an identity-based conflict? Why is it important? How might it be transformed into identity-based cooperation? Why is this relevant to me? This will account for 30% of their final grade.
Individual/Group Presentation – In addition to these papers and based generally on them, students will be encouraged to join with other students within their sections and prepare a joint 7 minute Ted-like Talk for presentation in sectional sessions. These collective presentations will be worth 15% of each students’ grade.

Summary

  • Students will pick an identity-based conflict to organize their paper around.
  • The main questions they will answer in this paper are:
    • What makes this an identity-based conflict?
    • Why is it important?
    • How might it be transformed into identity-based cooperation?
    • Why is this relevant to me?
  • Prepare a 7 minute maximum Ted-like Talk for presentation in sectional sessions during weeks 9 & 10
  • Upload the presentation in PDF format to Canvas (and video recording if you have made prior arrangements with your TA about pre-recording your presentation). Only one submission per group is required.
    • Upload by June 6th 11:59pm

Sample Outline:

Begin with clear reflexive introduction

Why is this relevant to me?

  • Be reflexive – talk about my why!
    • Why does this conflict interest me?
    • ask yourself WHY, why, why, you are interested in this topic, and how your own life experiences, background, values, and so forth influence your understanding.

Background to conflict

  • Main events (might summarize annotated chronology of conflict in chart form)
  • And/or provide brief history

What makes this an identity-based conflict?

  • Is there a conflicting historical narrative?
  • Antagonism: Us vs Them, Blame, Attribution, Projection
  • g. Kelman or Azar’s framework for identity-based conflicts

Why is it important?

  • Consequences of conflicts
  • What are the collective and individual needs that are frustrated or threatened in this conflict?

How might it be transformed into identity-based cooperation? As examples:

  • How might ARIA be used as an analytical or organizing framework
  • Cooperative problem-solving techniques (i.e. integrative problem solving)
  • Track 1, 2,3
  • Grassroot movements

What did I learn in working on this project that is important to me?

  • Be reflexive – again, summarize my why. Why I selected this topic and what, reflexively speaking, I learned in working on this project (i.e. about yourself, your world, about conflict and cooperation, etc.)?

airlines (COVID-19)

Part I: Writing Exercise: Covid-19 and the Economy
The ongoing pandemic is shaking the foundations of the global economy. There are many topics to talk about on this. Choose one topic that concerns or interests you.
Your topic may be macro (national or global), micro (company- or industry-specific), or personal (something you are seeing or experiencing). Here are a few examples…

  • Accumulation of government debt
  • Accumulation of student debt
  • Insolvency of colleges and universities
  • Bailout of airlines – should they happen?
  • Unemployment claims
  • What will happen to health care premiums because of this?
  • Repercussions of the cratering of oil prices
  • Is it possible for an economy to sustain itself long-term while social-distancing?

Whatever topic you come up with, take some time and read up about it beyond what you already know. Ask yourself what the present situation is. Find some data and visual aids that help to explain what’s going on.
In your writeup, first describe your topic, then illustrate the state of things, and finally offer your thoughts. You do not need to provide “solutions” to the problem; that is up to you.
You will be graded on effort and thoughtfulness. It can be as long as you’d like, and should be 3 pages minimum. Use sources just like you did on Assignment 1 (simply copy/paste URLs as needed). For this exercise I am interested in content; I want to see how you reflect on what’s going on, and I’m not very concerned with proper grammar or format. If you would like to run a topic by me, feel free to send me an email.
