Human Factors Brief: Metacomprehension and Virtual Reality Fidelity (PLG1)

There are many industry simulation systems that are used for training new operators. The expectation is that training with a virtual system will translate to comparable experience that would be gained working in a real-world environment. Examples are GE High Fidelity Plant Simulators, plasma welding and torching, underground mining, nuclear reactors, oil production platforms, and others. For instance, Siemens has an advanced simulator to train technicians how to assemble machines that employ 3-D technology and virtual engagement with VPL gloves and VR-Star goggles as the trainee moves through a cylinder resembling the actual working environment. Proponents claim this type of full experience allows greater fidelity of actual working conditions and enhances comprehension in the work environment. Let’s say you have been brought in to a design review as a human factor’s specialist. At issue are concerns about how operators familiar with an older system might respond to the virtual reality simulation training. When considering how humans think about their own thinking (metacognition), a dimension of that involves how humans correct their thinking when new information is assimilated or they become aware of certain discrepancies (metacomprehension). In your view, does the added fidelity and complexity in these types of virtual training reinforce comprehension skills and translate directly to the actual working conditions, or is it more likely to generate a loss of confidence and confusion when trainees fail to execute correctly once on the job? Explain your reasoning and also indicate to what extent any difficulties might be attributed to metacomprehension effects. Provide at least one scholarly resource to support your assessment.Present this as a brief. Your brief should be approximately 800 words in length and should be written in APA format.

Identify the two sides of the ethical dilemma here (hint: the drug may or may not work). Don’t be shy with your comments.

Question Take any character from a movie or television series (i.e., a character that occurs in more than one episode) that has/had a significant psychological disorder, and, using terms from the chapter on psychological disorders, documentary/real life videos, and the DSM-V, explain what the psychological disorder is and why it occurs.Note: Movies (even compiled lists of movies) can often mislabel psychological disorders, so make sure you understand the nature of the psychological disorder.Your response should include the following:

  • How do you think society views psychotherapeutic versus biological treatment

Question

  • How do you think society views psychotherapeutic versus biological treatment approaches for psychological disorders? What do youthink? What has influenced your attitudes and opinions? Share you thoughts on some of the “newer” trends in treatment (e.g., Ecstasy, video games).
  • More and more people are seeking therapy online for the convenience it offers. What are some possible advantages and disadvantages to online therapy? For example, how can clients verify the qualifications of the therapist? What role does face-to-face contact play in therapy? Would patients be more open or less open in an online setting, compared to an office setting? If you were to seek out the help of a therapist, would you participate in therapy sessions online (as opposed to in-person)? Why or why not?
  • The textbook highlights that, although there are many effective treatments available, many people still do not receive mental health care. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (2011) cites several facts with regard to the high costs of untreated mental illness. Given these facts, where are we failing as society to ensure that everyone receives the mental health care that they need? What are the forces at play that prevent people from seeking or receiving mental health treatments? What challenges would we, as a society, face trying to turn this around?
  • Should people with severe mental illness who commit crimes be treated differently than people who don’t have mental illness? Does it make a difference whether you are “mad” or “bad?” Why, why not? Which mental illnesses should apply? What kind of dilemmas did you see for the men who were profiled? What about the people who worked at the jail? What are some of the inherent problems with having a prison system being a major mental health provider? How effective do prisons seem to be at meeting the rehabilitation needs of mentally ill prisoners based on what you’ve seen in this video? For those of you who also watched Prison State, what are your thoughts on the similarities and differences in the roughly decade period of time between the two documentaries?
