Discussion 1: In previous editions of the DSM, there was a “grief exclusion” in the criteria for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) such that a person could meet criteria for MDD, but if they had had a recent loss (and felt that this loss accounted for their symptoms), they would not be diagnosed with MDD. Instead, this would be seen as normal grieving. In the DSM-5, this exclusion was removed. This means that after a major loss, if a person met criteria most of the time for a two week period, they could be diagnosed with MDD. This was a highly controversial decision, with strong opinions on both sides of the debate. What are your thoughts? What are some of the drawbacks or risks of removing the grief exclusion? What are some of the benefits or improvements removing the exclusion could bring? There is no right or wrong answer here, so feel free to explore ideas. Discussion 2: Over the next few weeks, we are going to be learning more about psychological assessment. We’ll be looking at different forms of assessment including intelligence testing, personality testing, testing for psychopathology, and more. Are there any aspects of assessment that especially interest you? Are there specific tests or measures you would like to learn more about? Are there elements of psychological testing you find problematic or troublesome? Share your ideas and questions here!
