Read pages 22-27 of POPCP. Cornish and Clarke outline 25 techniques of situational crime prevention. These techniques fall into five categories: (1) increase the effort offenders must make, (2) increase the risks that offenders would face, (3) reduce the rewards of criminal offending, (4) reduce the provocations of criminal offending, and (5) remove excuses used by offenders to commit crimes. Provide two examples to add to this chart, and designate which category/technique they would fall under. For example, under #17 (“avoid disputes”) I could discuss jail classifications. That is, when offenders are processed in jail they are asked about gang affiliations – this is done to separate gang members into different areas of a jail/prison so that they do not fight with each other. Be creative!
