Ecology of Crime
1. Have you ever felt unsafe because of some aspect of the designed environment? A narrow sidewalk near a busy highway? Walking next to a building with no windows? Explain how the environment could have been designed to make you feel safer. CPTED addresses many different crimes. What types of crimes come to mind immediately? 2. Can you think of examples of how design might make a space more attractive to criminal activity? What kind of research would benefit CPTED designers? Where might you find the data necessary to make good design decisions? What types of concerns does a designer need to keep in mind, given the understanding that crime prevention can’t be the sole focus?
