Similarly, after having read the quotes on p. 8 of your syllabus and thought deeply about the multiple ways they force us to think about what we know (or what we think we know) and the ways that we have come to “know what we know”, choose one quote that resonates with you (that you like or that you find meaningful) and tell us why this quote is important for our learning. (Total length of this part: two well developed paragraphs)PART II (one big idea from readings and films):From week two readings and films: write a well-developed essay in which you address the following:From the short articles in Wood and Alexander, ch. I on Colonial Legacies, describe for us all of the ways that one of those short articles in “Problems in Modern Latin American History” (Townsend’s on the Conquest, for example, or Lane’s on Indigenous Labor, you choose one…) is important for our understanding of Latin America during the colonial era. Tell us about the different ways that different groups of people from Natives to Africans experienced colonialism (both of our books discuss this). Be sure to provide historical context from the rest of our readings (especially Chasteen’s ch. 2) and our films. *Some of you still have not received your copy of our reader “Problems in Modern Latin American History” that you’ve ordered. If this is the case with you, choose one big idea from Chasteen’s “Born in Blood and Fire”, ch. 2, Encounters, and our films “Engineering an Empire: the Aztec” and “Guns, Germs and Steel,” and tell us why that idea is important to our understanding of Latin America ((Total length of this part: two well developed paragraphs)Length of this whole essay: four well developed paragraphs with specific examplesSubmit both parts together in Canvas (just label each part: Part I, Part II). Write your essay in a word processing program so you can always have a copy. After you’ve proofread it and spell-checked it (this is formal writing- please no “text-ese” and capitalize when appropriate), select all of your text, copy it, paste it to the appropriate Discussion Forum and submit it (use a 12 pt font). Discussion Forums do not accept attachments so that everyone can read each other’s essays seamlessly without downloading files and we can respond to each other.Response Essay (mandatory). You are also required to respond to at least one other student’s original essay during the same time period (see the due date for the “Response Essay”- it is usually 3 days from the due date of your original essay). You can amplify on a point made, raise a related point, discuss the issue in relation to other documents, agree or disagree with supporting evidence (in a constructive way), and/or raise new informed questions that we should all think about. One or two thoughtful, well-developed, and well-supported paragraphs should suffice for your response. Be aware of the due date for that as well.Format/Works cited: Because you’re using our films, our books and our documents, just cite which ones you’re using: which film; which book (with page number); and which document (from which book and what page). Restates topic with little background and analysis. Need to go beyond summary and recitation and make connections to the rest of your readings. Need to reference readings. Need to show more complexity.
