INSTUCTIONS:  Read the Deborah Scroggins articles first, then watch the video debate between her and AminahAssilmi.  Fill in the grid below with information from both the articles and video as to each side’s views on each topic.  Then write 3paragraphs in response to the essay portion.  There is no answer key for this assignment- if you are able to see both sides of this debate clearly and understand how each feels about their stance, you have succeeded in this assignment (you needn’t agree with either side, the object here is to simple understand where they are coming from and why.)

Essay:

One thing that both speakers agreed on was the “horror” of the situations in Pakistan and the reality of how laws are practiced that restrict women’s rights and in many cases cost them their lives. 

1. Please write one paragraph in response to Amina’s comments at the end of the video that Islam is an ideal, not a practical reality. 
2. Using information from the Scroggins articles, write a second paragraph to discuss the concept of “cultural pollution” of Islamic principles and Koranic law as it applies to the cases she documented in Pakistan. 
3. And finally, write a third paragraph with your opinion to this question: Do you think it is fair to hold a religion responsible for the abhorrent practices of a portion of its followers that are justifying their views by “polluting” the original intent of the laws?
