Issues of Animal Trafficking
Animal trafficking entails the unlawful collection, transportation and distribution of animals and their body parts. It takes place both domestically and internationally and is said to the third most lucrative illegal business worldwide after drugs and weapons. Wildlife and environmental protection companies report that the number of animals smuggled every year is over 300 million, which is a problem for human beings as well as the environment. Animal trafficking is a big issue to the ecosystem and people caught should be severely punished. These agencies, as well as governments, try their best to curb wildlife trafficking but it becomes a challenge as the criminals find new ways to harm wildlife.
Initially, animal trafficking leads to overexploitation to the extent where animal survival is at risk. When the poachers indulge in the crimes, they harm and kill many animals that the existence of species is threatened hence led to the extinction of some animals. The poachers do not think about the animals or the harm their actions cause since their only motivation is money. Notably, wildlife is a significant part of the population and when affected affects the whole ecosystem. Extinction of animals leads to a change in the food chain balance. This then in return affects the entire wildlife as well as human beings. For instance, there are reports of wild animals being found looking for food among human beings. This is because the killing and illegal transportation of animals affects the food chain and they have to look for new survival tactics.
Again, animal trafficking has led to the killings of non-targeted wildlife. Some of the animals that are killed include antelopes, seabirds and dolphins. The animal traffickers and poachers are not concerned with wildlife. They will kill anything that gets in their way when they are committing the crime. Research reveals that there are large numbers of untargeted animals and birds killed during animal trafficking and poaching. This affects the safety of all the wildlife animals. No animal is safe from these criminals, as they are not looking to conserve them, but instead make come from the animals. Some of the common animal traffickings include elephants, tigers, rhinos, sea turtles, Gorillas and wild birds. The sad fact is that most animal trafficking leads to killings of the animals as the poachers are only interested in parts of the animals. The individuals who buy these products are huge contributors to the ecosystem disruption. The buyers should deal with certified products, but most of them choose to buy the illegal ones as they go for a lower price.
Saving of wildlife is a job that includes the whole of the human race since the authorities alone cannot bring the crimes to a stop. Every person has a role to play to ensure that wildlife trafficking is curbed. For instance, if a person knows a poacher, they should report them to the respective authorities. Additionally, the transportation of wild animals can lead to the transmission of zootomic illnesses. The illegal transportation of animals does not include health checks hence there is no way of determining whether an animal has a transmittable disease. These diseases end up becoming pandemics among humans due to events that could have been avoided.
