Marriage and Family

Family and marriage

There are numerous types of marriages practiced across the entire world. Fraternal polyandry is among the type of marriage where brothers marry a single wife. This type of marriage has both advantages and disadvantages to the family and society at large. Therefore, the paper will focus on analyzing fraternal polyandry in terms of its impact on the family.

Fraternal polyandry is rare in most parts of the world but it’s common in Tibetan society where they believe that it is an ideal form of marriage and family. Tibetans claim that they practice fraternal polyandry for materialistic reasons. First, they argue that this marriage helps them achieve high standards of living by avoiding division of properties and land. Second, they argue that females in this society are fewer than men therefore fraternal polyandry would bring fairness. Third, they argue that the region lies in high altitude areas and the land is barren; therefore perpetuating that this marriage will protect them from starvation.

Fraternal polyandry is known for keeping family property intact, and this discloses the advantage side of the practice in the society. Under fraternal polyandry, brothers no longer split up the family inherited assets like land. According to (Goldstein, 1987) in Tibetan society the decision for the brothers to marry same wife brings out the materialistic trait of the people. This is witnessed from the explanation that Dorje gives for marrying the wife that his brother has married. He says that marrying different wives would split family land. Therefore, the practice of polyandry secures the family land by preventing land fragmentation that would occur when brothers decide to marry different wives.

In conclusion, the above discussion discloses the advantages side of embracing polyandry to a family. The benefit of practicing polyandry is born to family in that there is no splitting of land and also achieving higher standard of living.
