MLA Essay: The Most Commonly used Essay Style for Humanities Subjects

There are various essay writing styles and each discipline recommends different styles to be used for term papers, research dissertations and essay papers. The recommended writing style also differs from college to college and even different tutors may have their own preferences. However, MLA format prescribed by Modern Language Association of America (MLA) is the most commonly used and recommended writing style for papers on humanities subjects. So, when you need to produce a MLA essay for your English, Literature or any other humanities subject, make use of the below guidelines to ensure compliance with MLA style guide.

Following are some of the key formatting requirements that are prescribed by MLA style which you need to apply in your essay format:

  • Use a font style such as Times Roman.
  • Size of the font should be 12-point.
  • Keep 1-inch margin all around the paper.
  • Double space the whole document.
  • New-paragraph tabs (indentations) should be 1/2-inch.
  • Single space between paragraphs.
  • Include last name and page number set flush right within the header details.
  • Student name, Tutors name, course information, submission date, other Information designated by professor to be included at the top of the first page.
  • Center the title and capitalize.
  • Parenthetical in-text citation of sources.
  • A separate work cited page arranged alphabetically.

Correct referencing is very important to be adhered to by all good essay writers and MLA style requires you to give credit and acknowledge other’s ideas by mentioning source details within the text itself next to the sited text. Full details of the source should be provided in the Works Cited page.

Within the intext citation, you need to provide the Author’s name, the year of publication and the page number if you are directly quoting some text. Usually it is the author, or title and date that are included within the text. The reference list is called a “Works Cited” page as per MLA Essay style and has to start in a new page and included at the end of the essay. This list too must be double spaced and you need to use hanging indents for the second line of each citation. Hanging Indent refers to the second and subsequent lines of each cited entry being indented with a ½” tab. Arrange the works cited page in alphabetical order.

If you still need some additional guidelines, there are plenty of essay tips on MLA style on the net and some of the style guides will let you see visual samples of how to format the essay and works cited page.
