Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
1. Please stick to examining the book itself in the context of your thesis or you will be doing the wrong assignment. Be sure to quote from at least 3 chapters (at least once from the first 4; once from 5-8, and once from 9-11) in your paper or points will be deducted. 2. Use a thesis1 and a conclusion. Make sure to quote from the “original″ book in your paper or points will be deducted. Note: Going to the Internet, quoting from any other source except the book directly will result in a zero for the assignment. 3. Length: 1500-2100 words (12 pt. Times or Times New Roman, 1 inch margins, double line space only; name, class, date, should take up 2 lines). Deduct large quotations from the length of your paper. 4. This assignment is meant to induce you to examine our readings from a “scholarly” perspective (i.e., an objective, comparative assessment of the text synthesizing its cultural significance, literary value, narrative strategies, goal and function, etc.), and are thus not supposed to be a summary of the book, nor a personal/emotional response to the book. 5. In your essay make sure to present your views in a well-organized essay, ending with a conclusion of your findings. You may quote the text to give evidence of your thinking, but make sure the thinking is in your own words.
