Urbanization is something that has
begun to change the way we live and how we interact with others. One of the major factors that urbanization has caused in the need to travel distances to and from. The ability to use public transportation has decreased as people have started to develop rural areas around the city. Public transportation has mainly become for the poorer people in our area who have trouble affording cars and even the gas to fuel up the car. The problem is that routes for buses have changed alongside that because the decreased need to use buses. I have noticed in the phoenix metropolitan area they have decided to spend money to help with public transportation and we actually installed a light rail that goes all the way to the airport. The light rail is intended to help people to drive their gas and diesel using vehicles less while still having a way to get into phoenix for work. This is just one thing that urbanization has caused in the phoenix metro area. Another thing that I would like to touch on is the agricultural side of this problem. Many landowners have to give way to the cities and others so they can build infrastructures to help growing areas in the phoenix area. I have always lived on the outskirts of phoenix and over the past 12 years I have watched as crops and farm fields have been turned into buildings for apartments and industrial companies. This is due to the high demand of urbanization outside of Phoenix. I believe that some of the best ways to handle what has happened is to limit the building of things that are not needed. As stated earlier with the light rail it was and is a wonderful solution to help sustain air quality in AZ by having less people driving vehicles and giving them a great solution with the light rail. It is much faster than waiting for a bus and a lot safer in the mind of many people. The second part about the rapid growth of apartments, homes builders, and industrial complexes is limiting how many can be in a city. I know in the city in which I live there are 8 grocery store complexes with-in 8 square miles of each other. We are allowing people to build whatever they want wherever they want at a time when we should have agricultural products growing around us. In order to sustain we have to have food products and a means and place to grow those things. With urbanization we are forcing our agricultural side to move further away and it is actually costing us because the travel cost of food raises the prices. I believe they need to fill the homes and apartments they have already built and support the stores that are already established in places to keep them in business. We need to sustain what we already have and not try to further expand when it really is not needed at the time.
