A Harvest of death.
Mass Media/ Journalism
Lo Mismo :The Disasters of War (Spanish: Los desastres de la guerra) is a series of 82[a 1] prints
created between 1810 and 1820 by the Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco Goya (1746–
1828). It is believed to be a grisly indictment of humanity.
A Harvest of death: This art work depicts hundreds and thousands of torn union and rebel
soldiers in the civil war called the battle of gettysburg with death and destruction. Shoes were
routinely removed from corpses because supplies was limited and the troops that survived
needed them.
Both works were both war related which was expressed by the enormous death toll and blood
shed, ranging from the beheading in Lo mismo and the carcasses that littered every where in
Gettysburg. The larger point i hope to make is tolerance, that we should strive to make peace
with one another and discourage every temptations that is capable bring about war amongst
people like a civil war or nations against nation like US vs Iraq.
Contemporary Social or Cultural expression is the Mass media/ Journalism, which provides
feedback in real time by transmitting the actions at the war front in real time and live coverage
through the social media such as youtube, facebook live and real time pictures on Instagram,
facetime and prints all with the gory details. Famuwagun 2 A man about to cut off the head of a soldier with an axe.
Francisco Goya, The Disasters of War (Romanticism), 1810–1820
Francisco Goya created “The Disasters of war” from 1810-1820. This was a Spanish struggle
against the French army under Napoleon Bonaparte, who invaded Spain in 1808. The Lo mismo
painting here by Goya, depicts a man who was about to cut off the head of soldier with an axe.
This is just 1 scene out of about 80. This emphasis is placed on the power of war to dehumanize
everyone involved. The brutalities of the two armies was equaled by the Spanish people. It is
shocking to realize that during this war, the beasts are not the army but Spanish women fiercely
fighting to protect themselves and their children from a group of French soldiers.
(I) INTRODUCTION What is War?
A state of open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations. a state of hostility,
conflict, or antagonism. Cicero defines war broadly as a contention by force. Hugo Grotius adds
that "war is the state of contending parties, considered as such. Thomas Hobbes notes that war is
also an attitude: "By war is meant a state of affairs, which may exist even while its operations are
not continued;" Denis Diderot comments that war is "a convulsive and violent disease of the Famuwagun 3 body politic;" for Karl von Clausewitz, "war is the continuation of politics by other means", and
so on. Similar issues dog those who support total warfare in which the military target
traditionally sacrosanct people and entities: from non-combatants, women and children, to works
of art and heritage buildings
Romanticism is an artistic literacy and intellectual movement that originated in the Europe
towards the end of 18th century in the mid of 1800 to 1850. Romanticism is characterized by its
emphasis on emotions and individualism as well as adoration of the past and the nature. In the
other way round romanticism has really impacted in the industrial revolution and political norms
of most of the countries in the world today (Moyano, et al.2012). Romanticism basically has
impacted in the liberalism and the radicalism on its long term effects in the growth in the
nationalism of most of the states. Realism on the other hand is the art which represent the subject
matter truthfully without avoiding artistic convection and supernatural elements. Realism on the
other side has been widespread in the arts at many periods and it is also a technique and training
of actual styles. There are some of the examples of realism arts such as verismo, theatrical
realism and Italian neorealist and literally realism.
According to Francisco Goya Romanticism art embodied a very subjectivity, imagination and
emotions and the characteristics which are reflected in the prints and some of his private
paintings. In the other side Goya was an intelligent observer in the world which he surrounds.
Francisco Goya in his arts responded in the real situations in the day to day life situations in
which it impacted in the later modern artistic lives ( Lopez et al 2012) He also influenced in the
artistic extension in the twenty-first century a measure in one way or the other have increased in
the artistic value in the entire universe. Francisco Goya paintings have impacted in the
information on mass media and journalism in relation to disaster and war as highlighted by the Famuwagun 4 painter basically more advancements have been made through the imposition of the paintings
done by Goya.
Goya in his formal portraits of the Spanish court is painted in a very lavish style which highlights
some of the wealth and the power of the royal household (Mendoza et al.2015). However, Goya
style of painting contains the criticism of the rulers in the world; this can be observed through
some of his latest work. Goya is one of the greatest painters in all the time this can be justified in
his paintings where women occupy a central place within the Goya oeuvre in his descriptions. In
the Goya style he depicted women as the queen of their power and their possessions in relations
of their political and sexual life. The romanticism was greatly highlighted by Francisco in the
private life of most of the women in the entire universe. Most of the works of Goya has exposed
his private life which has led to a lot of speculations in relation to the affairs in the Alba (Alonso
et al 2015). In the paintings of the Goya last paintings are among the darkest and very dynamic
creation in one way or the other contains the images of violence and despair. “A Harvest of Death": Union dead on the battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, photographed

Timothy O’Sullivan, A Harvest of Death (Realism/Photography), 1863 Famuwagun 5 This image shows the Civil War’s toll of death and destruction, especially apparent after the
Battle of Gettysburg, which took place from July 1 to July 3, 1863. Gardner’s caption identifies
the men in the photograph as “rebels represented…without shoes.” During the war, shoes were
routinely removed from corpses because supplies were scarce and surviving troops needed
them.Slowly, over the misty fields of Gettysburg–as all reluctant to expose their ghastly horrors
to the light–came the sunless morn, after the retreat by [General Robert. E.] Lee’s broken army.
Through the shadowy vapors, it was, indeed, a "harvest of death" that was presented, hundreds
and thousands of torn Union and rebel soldiers dead on the battlefield. Title:

Timothy o’ Sullivan was very influential photographers in the late 18th century and he achieved
several awards through his hard work concerning factors which the society was facing. In the
year 1863 Timothy embarked in a mission of creating awareness in regarding to the death of
soldiers the battle of Gettysburg. The release of the photograph of “The Harvest of Death” have
led to creation of several prolific arts such as “Dead confederate sharpshooter” field where General Reynolds” and “ Slaughter pen” ( Moyano et al 2013). The work of Timothy have a
great impact to the whole art industry work this is because most photographers have also used his
criteria and style in showcasing their skills and message in the society today. The good work of
Timothy has not only improved the art culture but has led to enlighten of people on what
happened in the past life. Mass media is a very wide collection of technologies that can reach a very large people in a very
short time. Mass media has contributed to the growth of the art industry as shown from the work
of both Francisco and Timothy the broadcast media have expanded their services in very many
sector in the world today a point which have made the media industry to grow in another level Famuwagun 7 (Fernandez-Gago et al 2013). In the mid-18th century the mass media industry was at his early
growth since their were gradual growth in the whole media sector.
Romanticism is a great factor in the society today as depicted by the super court painter
Francisco Gayo’s work. Francisco has shown some of the problems which the society is
undergoing some of these factors include violence, sickness and conflicts. Generally Goya has
stood up as the most creative and influential painter in the entire world this is because he stood
strong. In the late 18th century most painters have embraced the work of Gayo by emulating some
of his achievements n relating to the romanticism and realism. The world today has really learnt
on some of the implications brought by Gayo in his quest to have a better society. According to
the research which was conducted has indicated that overs 75% of the members of the public
have greatly benefited by the enormous changes he has brought. With communication networks now blanketing the globe and news organisations developing
their capability to report from almost anywhere, with new technology such as satellite
telephones, laptop computers, digital cameras and other inventions, transmission of news is
possible in real time. Soon commercial, high-resolution photographic satellites will be available
to news organizations. The capability of the news media to photograph a battle area during time
of war and thereby reveal the location of one’s own ground units, ships and airbases could be
very detrimental to the national security. This makes censorship virtually impossible. Famuwagun 8 Works Cited Connell ES. Francisco Goya. New York, NY: Counterpoint; 2004.
