Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay

Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay

Protecting the scope of practice for nurses, particularly advanced practice registered nurses, is a major initiative at the American Nurses Association (ANA) 2016. The ANA is working together with our Constituent Member (State) Associations to help remove geographic and practice setting limitations for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). The ANA is working state by state to ensure that state laws affecting APRN’s are both fair and consistent across the country, and that your scope of practice is not unfairly limited.Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay

Discuss how this initiative and how it will impact your future as an APRN and your clinical practice in the state in which you live. (Illinois) Include sources to support your assignment. 2 pages not including title and reference pages

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS

Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay
APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay

LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.

The best way to identify actions are within the domain of one’s nursing practice is education. What is a nurse’s scope of practice? It depends on what state they live in and what specialty they practice. In Texas: The mission of the Texas Board of Nursing (BON or Board) is to protect and promote the welfare of the people of Texas by ensuring that each person holding a license as a nurse in this state is competent to practice safely. The Board fulfills its mission through the regulation of the practice of nursing and the approval of nursing educational programs.

This mission, derived from the Nursing Practice Act, supersedes the interest of any individual, the nursing profession, or any special interest group. (Texas, 2011) Scope of practice pertains to what can a nurse legally and ethically practice. An adult ICU nurse should not practice in a Neonatal ICU, unless they have the training and certificates to do so. It also pertains to continuing education and making sure that all licenses and certifications are up to date. I have a paramedic license. I can intubate a patient in the field.Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay

But, I cannot intubate a patient in the hospital setting. I know the difference between my scope of practice as a nurse and as a nurse paramedic. Safe practice means that institutions should have current policies and procedures for nurses to refer to as guidelines. Each institution should also have unit based competencies to ensure that nurses are all practicing uniformly their specific unit skill sets. Each institution should have a clinical nurse educator, but if one is not available, each nurse is responsible for their own education for their patient’s safety

Scope of practice is a term that defines the procedures, processes, and actions a licensed individual can carry out in relation to his/her qualification. Qualification includes training, education, and experience. The practice act contains the scope of practice for all health occupations that require a license in order for the healthcare personnel to operate in a particular field in the health industry. The emergency department is a very critical unit in a health care center that handles patients who check in with life critical illnesses and injuries. These cases are usually unplanned for, and they require immediate attention. The emergency department is dedicated to such emergencies (NCSBN, 2009).
Corker et al. (2008) observe that there has been an increase in emergency department visits by patients due to; a shortage in physicians, increased medical costs, and reduced medical insurance coverage. Most of the patients present minor injuries and minor health complaints to the emergency department that sorted effectively by an emergency nurse. Hence, there was a need for nurse practitioners in the emergency department in order to reduce waiting time and to allow the physicians to attend to medically urgent cases (Corker et al., 2009). Nurse practitioners also offer cost effective health services while improving efficiency at health care centers (Schwartz, 2010).Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay

An emergency nurse’s scope of practice includes:
Triage
The emergency nurse should triage all the patients that arrive at the emergency department in order to determine the priority of a patient’s treatment, as well as the factors influencing patient flow. At triage, the emergency nurse assesses the patient’s health complaints after which a symptom analysis effected. After assessing the patient, the nurse communicates to the other emergency team members on a patient’s arrival, and assigns the patient to the relevant health care department. The nurse can also intervene as per professional nurse’s scope of practice in that state. The nurse can also carry out collaborative intervention through the initiation of resuscitative measures, diagnostic testing, and treatment as per the policies and procedures of the health institution (Carlson, 2010).

Assessment
The nurse is to carry out an initial assessment on the patient. This entails data collection from the patient based on the patient’s complaint. The nurse is to review the patient’s health history and carry out a physical assessment. The nurse is also to carry out an on-going assessment whereby a record of the patient is stored as per the illness requirement. The recorded information is communicated to the relevant persons the soonest time possible (Carlson, 2010).Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay

Planning
The nurse is to formulate a care plan for the emergency patients based on the data collected from the patient. The nurse is also responsible for the availability of supplies and equipment for catering for the patient. The nurse should be aware of the current laws on the delivery of health care to emergency patients and adhere to them (Carlson, 2010).

Intervention
The emergency nurse initiates a plan of care based on the patient’s diagnosis and assessment. The nurse should carry out independent actions such as; patient education, patient monitoring, and life saving actions that are within the nurse’s scope of practice. The nurse should collaborate with other health care workers in the implementation of the patients care plan (Carlson, 2010).Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay

Evaluation
The nurse should assess and modify the plan of care based on observations of the patient and as per the intended response and goal of improving the patient’s health. This entails the assessment of the patient’s current data in comparison to health history records and information from the primary care giver (Carlson, 2010).

Limitations in emergency nursing practice
There are situations that the emergency nurse needs to consult or refer the patient to a medical officer or a general practitioner. The situations include:

Persisting symptoms or signs despite treatment
Recurrence of symptoms, signs, or infection
Change in behavior whose cause is not organic
In a potentially life threatening situation such as:
When a patient displays symptoms that are a threat to life or other body parts
If the patient exhibits, a blockage in any system
If there is evidence of severe infection
A fever of more than 39 degrees Celsius in children between 3-36 months
Any physical damage below the fascia
When there is deterioration of the patient’s chronic condition
Other conditions that are out of the nurses scope of practice (Ranger, 2007).Protecting The Scope of Practice Essay
