Consider the issue of the researcher’s moral responsibility for how her or his discoveries are put to use. For example, research on persuasion and self-justification has yielded a number of potent strategies for influencing people’s behavior. These techniques can be used for good or ill, depending on the purposes of those who possess the knowledge and resources to use them. Do you feel it is immoral or dangerous for researchers to develop this knowledge, without being able to control how it is used?
Do you think some form of control over the use of research findings could or should be implemented? If so, how?
Finally, do you think it is right for potent techniques of persuasion to be employed to change people’s behavior, without their knowledge? Would you feel the same way if it were used “for their own good”—such as influencing people to stop smoking or to use condoms to prevent AIDS? If you were a researcher, how would you deal with this moral dilemma?
