How would you motivate an employee who seemed capable, but who was underperforming? What strategies would you employ to encourage better performance?
If one of my employees seemed capable of completing a task, but was under-performing, then I would address the problem head on. If I did not say anything, then this person would still under-perform and cause problems for the whole team. Next, I would try to find the root cause of why the person was not performing to the standard. The person may have a misunderstanding about the expectations. After discussing the expectations with the employees, I would coach the employee and lay out the plan. Their progress would be monitored. If the employee improved, then they would receive some type of reward.
Some strategies that I would employ to encourage better performance would be the following: give clear feedback, listen to employees, create performance goals together, follow up, recognize and reward improvement (Phillips, 2014).
