So, is there any one of us who truly looks forward to our annual review,
also known as our “performance appraisal?” Too often, the process is just unpleasant and even produces stress and anxiety for employees. Today more organizations are implementing performance management processes, which does include a performance appraisal function, but is simply a small component of the entire performance management system. Performance reviews are viewed as an opportunity for employee growth.
It is our responsibility as HRMs to communicate with employees and ensure they understand how well they are doing in their jobs, the strengths and the weaknesses of their job performance. During the review, we want to ensure the employees have a clear understanding of steps they can take to improve their performance. Last, but certainly not least, we want to ensure the employees clearly understand how their performance aligns with the strategic mission of the organization and contributes to the organization’s bottom line. So we are focusing on a very important organizational function: a mission that has direct impact on an organization’s success.
Dr. Herman Aguinis, a noted scholar of Performance Management, writes Performance Management is “a continuous process of identifying, measuring, and developing the performance of individuals and teams and aligning performance with strategic goals of the organizations” (Aguinis, p.3). Looking forward to hearing your ideas this week about Performance Management, this very critical function in today’s organizations.

DISCUSSION INSTRUCTIONS:
NOTE: This week you have a choice between Question 1 or 2, and respond to Question 3.
Begin a new thread for each response to a Discussion question. Take your time and develop each response thoroughly. Include a minimum of 2 sources (cited in-text and referenced in APA style with a hyperlink) for each response to a question. In the Title line, identify the response with the question number. Example: Question 1 or Question 2. When you read and then comment to another student’s response, simply, click on Reply, review your title and being typing your response into the text box. For netiquette and grading, be sure to include the name of the person you are responding to at the top of the text box.
Post your original response to the questions by midnight THURSDAY and read and comment to one or more classmates per question by midnight Sunday.
Question 1
Begin by defining Performance Management in your own words. Next, identify three (3) of the performance issues discussed in the assigned readings or that you’ve identified through your independent research. First define each and then discuss the issues of each as they impact the performance review process. How can an HRM mitigate each of the issues?
Don’t forget to include two references.
OR
Question 2
Begin by defining Performance Management in your own words. Next, identify three (3) best practices for a performance evaluation system discussed in the assigned readings. Conduct a bit of independent research and compare or contrast the ideas of at least one reference you find interesting.
As you develop your ideas be sure to include your thoughts about which are the important aspects of an improvement plan and defend your argument by explaining why they are so important.
Don’t forget to include your reference to support your arguments.
Question 3: What haven’t we focused on? (Everyone Responds)
There is a wealth of information available in our text and in the literature! Similar to the situation in Week 3, I cannot possibly ask you questions about every topic and concept – but I want to make sure you know the material. For example, we didn’t talk about the new recommendation that performance reviews be conducted more frequently – as in monthly.
For this last topic, I would ask you to select a topic that sparked your interest this week and summarize your understanding about the topic. I would like to see at least two paragraphs in which you explain your understanding about any aspect of the employee performance management – whether it’s ideas about the process issues, techniques, or procedures. Conduct independent research and include your sources. You get to choose your focus.
