However, some of the info in chapter two must be introduced to students, in terms of social responsibility. Again, this is a brief overview. I encourage you to do your own research into the following situations and similar events.

Most important of all to be understood with research principles is to do no harm. We must do our very best to harm no one, and stay away from deception in research. Institutional Review Boards (IRB) across the world peer review research projects to weigh good and harm. Some major human atrocities have been committed in the name of science, and not just by Nazis. The US has a poor history with research ethics. I’ve included a couple of links below that will shed some light on social science research that harmed participants. The last two links “Long” and “Short” correspond with long and short informative videos about the Tuskegee Syphilis Expereiment. Be sure to review the syphilis study recruitment letter. Unfortunately, many of my students seem to have little-to-no knowledge about the Tuskegee syphilis study. It is important that this history is not lost over time. I recently asked a classroom of 19 how many were familiar with the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and only one student was familiar with the story. Exposing you all to such historically deceptive research techniques emphasizes the necessary adherence to a code of ethics.

My intent with this information and assignment is so this 40-year event will not be lost to history. Were you familiar with Tuskegee Syphilis experiment?
