Being aware of Belasco’s Food System Triangle and how our eating is composed of these three factors coming together rather than a single element.
Choose a social movement that has food as its basis. Note that social movements are generally “conscious, concerted, and sustained efforts by ordinary people to change some aspect of their society by using [generally] extra-institutional means”, but, also at times, institutional means [such as courts, legislation, elections, etc.]. (Manza, et. al. 2018. Sociology Project 2.5. pp 473. NY: Pearson) Social movements point to politics, morals, view of society, social change to name a few. Research a specific food movement. You can pick from any of the following:
food justice, sustainability, local food, farm to table, farmers markets, food education in grade school, farm aid, anti-hunger initiatives, particular diets such as vegetarian, vegan, paleo, gluten-free, etc.
Apply Belasco’s Food System Triangle to the food movement. Make sure to clearly and logically present all three points of the triangle in regard to the food movement.
