Some of you who are parents know what it is to impose punishment on
your children. In administering punishment we should always have a goal. We don’t arbitrarily try to hurt them and we don’t punish them for punishment’s sake. In the criminal law system there are ostensibly four reasons for imposing punishment on a person convicted of a crime.

-Incapacitation
-Deterrence
-Retribution(1) Which do you think is the most important and why? Or do you think we should have another goal, distinct from the four listed above? If so, what would it be? This question is looking for what do you think punishment is supposed to accomplish?
