Students will review two Indigenous Studies (under whatever title) programs at other universities and submit a 3-page double-spaced paper. Compare and Contrast two university Indigenous Studies Programs. Look at what they teach, who their faculty are, and what kind of facilities and programs they have beyond the classroom, and what is unique about their program. Also look at how the importance of Land/Place is or is not incorporated in the programs.
Instructions:
Visit the link below (A Guide to Native American Studies Programs in the United States and Canada). Pick two Indigenous Studies/Native American Studies/American Indian Studies (whichever name the University uses). I suggest you pick two programs that are either both Undergraduate programs or Graduate Programs. This way you will be able to compare them more easily.
Each Report should address the following:
- An Introduction of each program: Name, location and type of programs (grad, undergrad), Mission and Vision of the programs, number of students enrolled, any tribal communities that are close in proximity to the University that the program seems to cater towards.
- An Overview of the Programs: What classes they teach, who their faculty are, and what kind of concentrations they focus on (if any). Is the importance of Land/Place incorporated into the program/curricula? Do they have student organizations? Do they offer internship programs? Do they talk about what students can do professionally after they earn their degree?
- Compare/Contrast the two programs: What are the main similarities? What are some of the main differences? In your opinion, which program seems better and why?
- These are just some questions to get you started. Please feel free to expand based on the programs you are searching.
Guidelines:
- 3 Page, Double Spaced (10-12 pt. font)
