The dark valley book review
In the book, there happens to be a series of battles between the Germans and the French which lasts for a year. The two countries are fighting over the possession of the French Vandum city. In this war, three hundred people died and over four hundred and fifty people wounded. Like many other battle fields, the Vandum war was basically trench based. Soldiers would crawl through muds and momentarily rise with their machines guns pinned over there protective heaps and attack the soldiers at the trenches over the other side. Wilfred Owen described this kind of battle fields as fatal as they killed nearly half of Europe’s seed, one after the other. Panorama of the 1930’s is the sub- title given to the dark valley. Therefore Brendon displays wisdom by bringing up a description of the World War 1 in the beginning of the book. This is because of the similarities the war of Vandum shares with the World War 1 scenes such as the castrators and the powerful egoist people with the best ideas who revolutionised Europe’s previous order.
It’s true that there had been battles and revolutions in between the time but the nineteenth century in Europe retained a discernible culture, which is the order of things. The question that rises from this is what was the previous order? Previously there existed a balance between the aristocracy and the positivism. That is the junked regressive instincts and the Manchester liberal efficiencies. There is one major reason that led to the death of the order. At that particular era, the modernists were certain that this is a morality play because the spiritual body was weak to carry the load of heavy dishonesty that it possessed, conceitness and its hidden but rotten hatred.
Brendon in his literature works has created a blueprint of those nations that were considered to be super power during the world war two. That is Japan, Russia, France, Germany and the Great Britain. This art piece eliminates third world countries like those from Africa and even India. Besides this, the picture created by Brendon in the valley is great piece of work covering a whole lot of aspects. What Brendon Is mostly concerned with is the political historical aspect and not the economic nor the culture. Just as Carlyle, he perceived history to be a total of many biographies. Brendon is very choosy when it comes to quoting memorialises in his book, to bring into picture both the negative and the positive side of the diplomats, dictators and generals. Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini are the people mostly remembered for their time in power (Brendon 206). In common they are all criminals. Then last but not least is Chiang Kai-Shek who was the big wig in the drug peddling business. He killed many peasants with the aim of reducing the support of Mao. He spent most of his time fighting the Chinese in which he conquered most cities. Brendon has evidently worked for the japan sections. He has highlighted on the earthquake that occurred in japan in 1930, the 1936 rebellion attempt, the Nanking rape among other incidences.
