The ability of nurses to provide a high level of care to each individual patient will cause a decrease in inpatient complications and a decrease in rates of inpatient mortality (Needleman, Buerhaus, Pankratz, Leibson, Stevens & Harris, 2011). A 2004 report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) stated that adverse events can increase the cost of a total treatment by 84%, length of stay by 5.1 to 5.4 days and probability of death by 4.67% to 5.5% (Garrett, 2008).
