The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

I was scammed a few weeks ago, sounds like pretty negative failure right? When I got off the bus, I went to the ATM and decided to retrieve cash. After putting HKD800 into my wallet, I continued to walk back home. Suddenly, two normally dressed strangers approached me through Mandarin on the streets. The feeling of fear immediately grew upon me. The couple from Beijing politely asked me to spare them some money for food because they have spent all their minimal amount of cash and had to wait until their relative to open the house door for them. “We are not trying to hurt you, we just really need help.”, they repeatedly emphasized. I was smart enough to realize that this whole situation is a scam as it always reported in the news. However, I didn’t want to think like that because they looked very pitiful, hungry and hopeless. I decided to give an excuse and tell them that I don’t have enough cash on me to purchase food, but the man said, “I saw you putting cash into your wallet just now though.” Although it was kind of odd for a stranger to directly say that, I still had a soft spot. I replied, “I have to use the cash later. Why don’t I use my Octopus card (stored value smart card) to buy you guys some food?” They agreed, so I brought them to a fast food restaurant and bought them a meal. We even exchanged social media accounts because they said they’ll pay me back. They blocked me later. I had very mixed feelings when I arrived home, I knew they wanted the money instead of food, but I decided to buy them food because I felt sympathetic. However, negative experiences may not always be as negative as you thought. This incident was a wake-up call for me to redefine the fine line between being a kind hearted person and a person being used because of his/her kindness. Being brought up in a protective world, I do not have much exposure to these kind of situations, hence it definitely widened my horizons. As I become more mature, being swindled by the two strangers did not only taught me to be cautious of my surroundings, but it also evoked my sense of curiosity. It allowed me to reflect and think about this question, “Is it really his choice to be a scammer or is it because society forces him to?”. Perhaps they chose this career path because they are suffering in poverty, having no choice but to obey their morals. Perhaps they did receive a quality education, but they are just not using it correctly, maybe they never even had the financial support to afford education. My mom always said, “You don’t only learn in school, you learn everywhere.” I did not understand this until I became a victim in this incident, and I realize that I am very lucky to be able to receive education. I do not want to be those people, I will not.

The cost of capital that applies to both investments is 12%. The life for both types of truck is estimated to be 6 years, during which time the net cash flows for the electric-powered truck will be $6,290 per year and those for the gas-powered truck will be $5,000 per year. Annual net cash flows include depreciation expenses.
