The purpose of clinical research is to understand the fundamentals
of medical illnesses or disorders to aid in the development of a cure, antidote, or vaccine that improves or remedies human health ailments or at minimum, increase the understanding of human biology. Without human volunteers to participate in clinical research make it nearly impossible to obtain the necessary medical data essential to the discovery phase for a new medicine or treatment plan. This is all made possible through human trials. Although ethical guidelines and safety of clinical trials are mandated by U.S. Common Rule (1991), among others, there is risk to human health. The purpose of these guidelines is both to protect patient volunteers and to preserve the integrity of the science. Even though some people accept the risk of harm for the good of others, it has the potential for exploitation of patient volunteers.
