Unit Assessment: CIPD Level 5 Developing Professional Practice in Learning and Development (5LDP)
Unit Type: Core Credit Value: 6
Background to Unit
The role of the learning and development (L&D) function is changing due to a number of factors, including paradigm
shifts in learning, advances in our understanding of how people learn, new technologies, business strategies and the
emergence of new roles for L&D professionals. The aim of this core unit is to familiarise the learners with current
trends and practices in L&D and to enable them to develop a sound and comprehensive understanding of the core
knowledge, skills and behaviours required by L&D professionals, whatever their role. Current trends and practices in
L&D will be examined along with a consideration of a range of roles and career paths. The unit, with reference to the
CIPD’s Profession Map, will consider a number of the wider performance requirements, including work management,
project management, creative problem-solving, teamwork and building effective professional relationships. Learners
will be supported in assessing their strengths and development areas against L&D practice capabilities. They will be
guided in developing the knowledge and skills required to identify development objectives, and in devising and
implementing a plan for continuing professional development (CPD).

Your task (3,900 words)
This assignment is asking you to undertake four tasks, where you explore and investigate a variety of
knowledge, skills and behaviours that are needed to be successful in an L&D role. Each task should be
answered fully and the word count distributed effectively across the activities.
Activity 1
Your manager has asked you to review current research on learning and development
practices and trends:
• Write a summary of three new practices or trends that you have recognised and also two new emerging
roles that can now be seen to be undertaken by L&D. (AC 1.1)
• You also need to identify for them, some of the key knowledge, skills and behaviours required by any
L&D professional in the workplace irrespective of role. It is important to explain why they are
important. (A.C 1.2)
o You need to use the CIPD profession map
o You should include a minimum of three examples for each i.e. three for knowledge, three for
skills and three for behaviours.
Activity 2
This activity is about application: you need to show how YOU have applied the techniques.
With reference to a recent or current project which you have led (or been part of a project team):
• Explain, with evidence, how you applied project and self-management techniques in the course of the
project. (AC 2.1)
o Evidence needed in your appendices: Completed Gantt chart/ PDCA; etc.
• Explain how you applied techniques to analyse and resolve problems encountered during the project
and how you used different methods to influence, persuade and negotiate with others. (AC 2.2, 2.3, 3.3)
NB: Remember to apply the models used.
Activity 3
Working in teams is very important for any successful organization, you have been asked to put together a
short fact sheet for managers to:
• Explain and analyse the concept of group dynamics. (AC 3.1)
• Discuss political behaviour in organisations and importantly, how it can impact on the achievement of
organisation and L&D objectives. (AC 3.2)
Activity 4
• Undertake a self-assessment against the L&D and behaviours sections of the CIPD Profession Map at
Band 2 (or other appropriate framework) to identify your professional development needs and options
to address them.
From your self-assessment you need to produce the following evidence:
• Evidence 1: (outside of word count) - Be able to apply CPD techniques to
devise, implement and review a
personal development plan.
4.1 Undertake a self-assessment of L&D capabilities to
identify development needs.
4.2 Select a justified option for professional
development.
4.3 Produce a plan to meet development objectives.
4.4 Reflect on performance against the CPD plan,
identifying any further learning needs and revise
the plan accordingly.
Ref: LDP/PwCAssBankEQA/SH/Jul 2018
o Produce a professional development plan (PDP) plan to meet your professional development
needs (No word count limit for PDP)
o A template can be found on the Moodle and this initial plan should focus on the next 6 – 12
months and have 4-5 SMART objectives
o This will be a working document throughout the programme, which will be explained as you go
through the programme.
o Save your HR summary reports from the assessment as they need to be uploaded with your
assignment.
• Evidence 2: (within the word count) (AC 4.1 and 4.2)
o Give a summary of the key areas (professional and behavioural) in which you want to develop
and justify (why have you chosen them) the options (at least two options) you have chosen to
develop them.
LDP Part 2 – To be completed at the end of the programme:
During your programme, reflect on your performance against your plan and record progress. You should
also identify any future development needs and revise your PDP accordingly. (AC 4.4)
In order for you to be able to complete Activity 4, you will start the process by taking an
initial self-assessment using the CIPD profession map. (CPD Map)
• Log onto http://www2.cipd.co.uk/cipd-hr-profession/cipd-hr-profession-map/default.html
• You will need to read around the concept of the CIPD Profession Map to ensure you fully
understand the idea of the professional areas, the behaviours and the bands (the concept will
have been covered in overview in your Introductory Workshop). You should be clear on the
difference between ‘knowledge’, ‘skills’ and ‘behaviour’;
• Click the link for ‘My CPD Map’ (you will need to have logged in using your CIPD username
and password);
• Firstly, undertake an assessment for yourself in the L&D area in relation to your own
current role (or if you are not in L&D, an L&D role you aspire to) for Knowledge and
Activities at Band 2.
• Secondly, undertake an assessment against at least 3 behavioural areas for yourself in
relation to your own current role (or if you are not in L&D, an L&D role you aspire to)
against a minimum of three behaviours (each behaviour assessment takes 5 minutes to
complete. You do not need to complete all of the assessments in one sitting. The system will
‘bookmark’ where you leave an assessment to allow you to return to where you stopped the
assessment);
You do not need to print off the full report for the purposes of this assessment, but it is a robust
document you can use to plan your HR career. In relation to this specific assignment you must
attach a copy of the summary reports with your assignment submission. There is guidance on
the LMS that will support you to do this.
You should relate academic concepts, theories and professional practice to the way organisations operate, in
a critical and informed way, and with reference to key texts, articles and other publications and by using
organisational examples for illustration.
All reference sources should be acknowledged correctly and a bibliography provided where appropriate
(these should be excluded from the word count). Demonstrating evidence of wider reading through
appropriate referencing will improve your answer and increase the likelihood of your work achieving a
‘Pass’.
