use a bold font style for the specific concept you are describing (and cite your source in text). Remember, it is OK to cite the textbook informally (i.e., “Hamilton, page 287”), and likewise with other content from the course (i.e., Nonverbal Communication supplementary reading, Week 5, page 88).

Also, once you have actively read all of the assigned readings, you may want to refer to the end-of-chapter lists of the concepts discussed in each chapter (you’ll find these in the Hamilton chapters as well as the supplementary chapters included in the Readings content area for Week 5). This information may help you as you consider connections between course content and your chosen film scene.

Copy and paste the following prompts into the discussion board at the link above. Some people find it easier to copy and paste the prompts into a Document Editor (like Microsoft Word), answer the questions, and then copy and paste the whole thing into their post. Either way works for me.

Prompt #1: Provide the website address/ link to your chosen film scene here. Also provide a brief introduction to the clip and discuss why you selected this particular clip for this discussion topic.

Prompt #2: Characters and Context – Provide a detailed and objective description of the context of the film scene. A good description of the context would be as objective and descriptive as possible (do not make interpretations here), and would include the following:

1. A description of the general location (e.g., American city, forest), the approximate year, season, time of day, weather (as applicable).
2. A description of specific location (in a house, apartment, sitting at a picnic table), and details about that location.
3. A description of the physical characteristics of the actors, including physical attributes (like gender, age, height/weight, hairstyle), clothing / costumes of the actors, and the names of the main characters, and their relationship to each other.
4. If relevant, briefly mention any music or other sounds besides dialogue (type, volume, tempo, etc.) and any unusual camera angles.
5. A description of the relationship(s) between the actors as well as any plot-based context that would be important in understanding the actor’s behaviors.

Prompt #3: Nonverbal Communication – Make some connections between your chosen video clip and concepts associated with nonverbal communication from this week’s readings. Be specific and descriptive in your discussion here. Describe what’s happening at that moment in the video clip, and then relate a concept from the readings to what’s happening. Try to make connections to at least three nonverbal concepts that can be discussed within the context of your clip. What nonverbal clues are given that help you understand how each character interprets their interaction with the other character(s) (for example, as threatening, fun, etc.)? How do you know?

Prompt #4: Make some connections between your chosen video clip and concepts associated with verbal communication from this week’s readings. Be specific and descriptive in your discussion here. Describe what’s happening at that moment in the video clip, and then relate a concept from the readings to what’s happening. Try to make connections to at least three verbal concepts that can be discussed within the context of your clip. What verbal clues are given that help you understand how each character interprets their interaction with the other character(s) (for example, as threatening, fun, etc.)? How do you know?

Prompt #5: Make some connections between the context / setting of your chosen video clip and the behavioral dynamics of the actor(s). How do you think the setting/situation affected the character’s behavior? Why might the director of the film have made the setting/contextual decisions that she or he did for this scene? Finally, comment on what you learned from or were surprised by in this observation/analysis experience. Be specific!
