Week 3 Assignment: Christian Principles and Values Essay.
Introduction
The Institute of Managerial Accountants (IMA), established in 1919 as the “National Association of Cost Accountants (NACA) has a long standing mission to “promote knowledge and professionalism among cost accountants. In 1991, the name changed to the IMA, but its core values were not. The IMA requires its members to behave ethically, and have four basic principles that guide how its members are to conduct themselves. These principles are honesty, fairness, objectivity and responsibility. Members of the IMA are highly regarded in the Accounting Industry and are the sponsor of the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation. While it is obvious to say the Bible has been around for longer than the IMA, it is also important to note the principles that guide the IMA are very similar to the guiding principles in the Bible. When looking at each of the four principles, this paper attempts to show the similarities between them. When reading this, consider being a Christian first and then an Accountant. In our lives today, we are too busy putting other titles ahead of God, when we should keep God first in everything we do.
Honesty
Honesty is sometimes referred to as integrity in the work place. Many people attempt to determine if a person is honest simply by playing a round of golf with them. The thought is if the person cheats at golf, then he would cheat you in business. Personally, I never play golf so I am bias when it comes to that method of determining if a person seems honest. There are many examples of people being dishonest by defrauding people for personal gain. Bernie Madoff who ran a ponzi scheme that caused many people to lose monies is one example and Author Anderson was an Accounting Firm that is no longer in existence because of what happened at Enron is another.
In both of these cases, the Bible teaches us that stealing is forbidden. So is not telling the truth, the commandments are often over-looked when we are conducting business but the fact is the Holy Bible speaks of several commandments about honesty Book of Exodus. The Ten Commandments all discuss how we as Christians are to act.Week 3 Assignment: Christian Principles and Values Essay.
Fairness
When I read the word fairness, I think of equity and things being equal. However, in the workplace things are not always equal. Members of the IMA have to deal with this in the same way Jesus Christ would. In the most famous Sermon I have ever read, the Sermon on the Mount, discussed how people were to be judged based on the crimes that they had committed. Jesus said, “An eye for an eye”. This does not mean if you break my leg, I get to break yours, no, it meant that the punishment had to fit the crime, without regard to who committed the crime. For Cost Accounting, fairness would mean that you would recognize revenues based on the policies in place. You would not take unwarranted risks in recognizing revenues that are not contracted or budgeted. Fairness would also mean, that if you are scheduled to get a bonus based on a number of sales, then you would not simply split orders to make your sales quota.Week 3 Assignment: Christian Principles and Values Essay.
Objectivity
I was once asked if the Bible could be interpreted objectively. As I thought about then, I did not really know, I mean in order for one to be objective, he would have to believe that his interpretation of the Bible is wrong in some way, wouldn’t he? The one thing about objectivity is truth, and the truth is always constant and consistent. The truth is not always what you want to hear, but it must always be spoken. Members of the IMA are required to speak the truth, just as the Bible teaches us about the truth.Week 3 Assignment: Christian Principles and Values Essay.
Responsibility
The IMA talks about responsibility with accountability. Each member is responsible for the information or data the member is sharing with other managers of the firm for which he works. The accountant has to maintain a standard of excellence When the Bible discusses responsibility; it does so as charging us as Christians. The Bible teaches us that we are to raise our children up in the Church and teach them how to become good Christians. We are to know the word of God, just as well as the Pastor or Reverend.Week 3 Assignment: Christian Principles and Values Essay.
Conclusion
The Bible and the principles of the IMA are very much related. It is not a coincidence the IMA bases its principles on the very principles the Bible teaches each of us as Christians. If we simply approach our work and school as Christians, we would then know how to conduct ourselves in the world of business and in other walks of life as well.Week 3 Assignment: Christian Principles and Values Essay.

Responses
Our required reading for this course also states that corporate social responsibility (CSR) includes more than just shareholders and stakeholders. It includes the community, the environment, customers, employees, suppliers and human rights. The firm has to take all of this into consideration when making a decision.
Recently, Toyota was fined over a billion dollars because they mislead their customers about the safety of their car. When I first heard this on the news, my first thought was about the information I had gotten off their website. They were touting how great their cars are and how safe they were. Only to find out that they knew that the floor mats could cause the accelerator to stick. This was the cause of several accidents over the past few years and it is an example of what could happen if a company places profits ahead of the truth. To me, that is what CSR really is. It will always be about the truth. When companies begin to stretch the truth, things become distorted and chaos ensues. The Bible teaches truth and is the best example in which all of mankind should follow. It teaches us to become good Christians. You termed it best as “Good Stewarts”.

100 %Total Weightage
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.Week 3 Assignment: Christian Principles and Values Essay.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
- Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
- Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
- One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
- I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
- Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
- In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
- Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
- Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
- Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
- Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
- I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
- I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
- As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
- It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
- For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
- Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
- Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
- Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.Week 3 Assignment: Christian Principles and Values Essay.
Late Policy
- The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
- Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
- If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
- I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
- As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
- Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
- Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
- Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
