Week 4 Discussion – Cancer Discussion Topic<br/><br/><br/>Every

year, about a million Americans are diagnosed with cancer.  This means that about 75 million Americans now living will eventually have cancer, and one in five will die of the disease.  There are many kinds of cancers and many causes of the disease.  For example, smoking causes most lung cancers.  Overexposure to ultraviolet rays in sunlight causes most skin cancers.  There is evidence that a high-fat, low-fiber diet is a factor in breast, colon, and prostate cancers.  And agents in the work place, such as asbestos and vinyl chloride, are also implicated as causes of cancer.  Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent each year in the search for effective treatments for cancer, yet far less money is spend on preventing cancer.

Given the information above address the following:
1. Why might it be true that we spend more money on treatment than on prevention?  Should we devote more of our resources to treating cancer or to preventing it?  Defend your choice.

2.  Pick one type of cancer and describethe following: the causes of this type of cancer, what gene or genes is/are mutated/deregulated to cause this cancer, and at least one prevention method (life style change, habit, increased awareness, etc.) that can be used to reduce the risk of developing your chosen cancer.  Be sure to pick a different cancer-prevention method combination than any of your classmates.

3.  Take one of the references you utilized in formulating your answer to part 2 of this conference and discuss whether you felt it was a scientifically accurate source of information.  Why or why not?  What are some of the criteria you use in determining the scientific validity of a source.
