The zika virus is all over the news! With the first cases reported in Florida, the concerns over Olympians in Rio to travel warnings for pregnant women, women, who could become or want to become pregnant and for men, who could impregnate women.

The concern about the spread of this virus is real. The consequences are real and life long.

So what are we to do?

One potential way to help curtail the spread of this virus is to release Genetically Modified Mosquitoes (Oxitec Mosquitoes) in areas where Zika is likely to spread.

Do some reading on these mosquitoes and the plan for their release, then do the following:

1. Explain whether or not you feel that this is a good idea.

2. What are the advantages and pitfalls in using a GMO to help combat the virus?

3. Is this going to be a long term solution to the problem? If not, what are better options?
