Over the last 50 years, the United States labor economy has changed from a manufacturing to service and technology focus. Other than the obvious changes, such as fewer mine tragedies and more carpal tunnel syndrome, what other trends in employment safety do you predict, and what is your evidence for that prediction? How should companies respond? How would you respond? Why?

CLASSMATE’S POST

Yes, over the past 50 years you have seen the number of accidents in the work place dramatically, because of OSHA. Fifty years ago, there was no safety or nothing safe about the work being performed, someone being killed on the job site was just part of the job. Then over the years people started developing this thing called OSHA, which sets safety standards and puts in place polices and rules and forces all companies to provide a safe work place, training, PPE and much, much more. With all this starting to take place, the numbers of work place accidents have dropped a lot. The number of people being killed on the job site has dropped, not saying there is not still accidents or the occasional death on the job but nothing like 50 years ago. You can look at the industry numbers of deaths per job, accidents per job and you can see that number is way smaller than 50 years ago and it will continue to drop. It will never be a perfect zero, but company can strive and do its best trying to reach it. Some companies have reached this goal, and some may never reach it, but you keep trying and do everything you can to make your company safer work place.
