Perceptions of International Trade
Question Description
Consider the following passage from the Problem Sets (#5.6) at the end of Chapter 7, and then post an answer to one of the first three choice questions and also to the mandatory Question #4 that follows.
Every year, the Gallup Poll asks a sample of people in the United States whether they believe foreign trade provides “an opportunity for economic growth through increased U.S. exports” or whether they believe foreign trade represents “a threat to the economy from foreign imports.” The following table shows the responses for 2 years.
View of Foreign Trade:
Year | Favorable | Unfavorable | U.S. Economy |
2008 | 41% | 52% | Recession |
2017 | 72% | 23% | Expansion |
Post an answer to at least one of these first three “choice” questions by Day 3.
- Why might the general public’s opinion of foreign trade be substantially different during an economic recession than during an economic expansion?
- Typically polls show that people in the United States under 30 years of age have a more favorable opinion of foreign trade than do people age 65 and over. Why might younger people have a more favorable view of foreign trade than older people?
- Can you identify another characteristic or circumstance that might explain why some people have a favorable view of foreign trade while others have an unfavorable view?
The selected tutor will be provided the e-book. Minimum of 350 words required.
