Exercise 2: Molecular Biology
Animals with red blood each have a large protein molecule called hemoglobin in their blood cells. Hemoglobin is needed to transport oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Hemoglobin, like all proteins, is made of amino acids.
Below is a summary of some of the amino acids of hemoglobin. Partial sequences are given for humans, chimpanzees, gibbons, gorillas, a monkey, and a mouse. Sequences that are identical for all animals are skipped.
For each non-human animal, identify any amino acids that are different than the human sequence and highlight these cells YELLOW. When you finish, record how many differences you found in the table on the next page.

You will be choosing a nursing leader to shadow for 8-10 hours in this week (module 6). You will be interviewing this leader as soon as possible so that you can gain required content and start writing your essay. This assignment requires you to choose a leader outside of your work facility unless you have my permission to work with a leader at your own facility! (If you can’t find a leader outside of you your own facility then a leader can be used but NOT in your DIRECT work area. This is to encourage you to spread your wings). I am also giving you permission to use the “sample interview questions” provided in the course instructions but feel free to add to that. There are 9 sample interview questions and I will copy them below for clarification. You must also INCLUDE a question about technology/ informatics so that is a total of 10 interview questions.
(Feel free to complete the process in a previous week that is convenient for you and the leader. The hours needed are a combined effort between a few hours of prepping, shadowing for a few hours, interviewing for an hour, and the time it takes for writing the paper – easily achieved with this combined effort.)
This week is about Qualities of a Nurse Leader.It is important for nurse leaders to engage with other nurse leaders to understand professional roles; a practice experience is assigned to achieve this end.
It is expected that you will spend 8-10 hours with the nurse leader, shadowing them in their position, observing them go about their day, and interviewing them. (prep and interview time can be included)
The interview can take place before, during, or after the shadow period or can be on a different day. (**Students who hold an RN license in the state of Washington must complete 10 hours of practice experience and submit their practice experience hours log. Please upload your log as a separate document in the Module 6 drop box)
You will engage with and interview a nurse leader in person. This activity was mentioned in the News starting in Module 1 so you have had ample time to solidify this experience and plan for this week.
Choose a nurse leader who holds a leadership nursing position in their organization who have direct reports (they supervise other employees). Examples of this include Director of Nursing, Director, Unit Manager. *You may not be employed in the same facility as your interviewee or shadow during personal work hours* (If special accommodations need to be made, approval by your instructor is required first).
Develop an interview guide before conducting the interview. Identify information that you want to know before the interview and plan clarifying questions. You must include at least one question about technology/informatics in the interview.
Conduct an interview regarding their professional role in the organization, and a current health care issue that is of interest to you (ethics, conflict management, budget, staffing, culture of safety, “just culture”, career advancement, quality improvement, etc.). Identify the name of the organization and use names of all involved (no anonymity is required for this assignment).
Prepare a written report of the interview. You may include photos, graphs, or charts but not required.
Sample questions below (You have permission to use these sample questions). I am looking for a MINIMUM OF 10 QUESTIONS in your interview and these must be presented as a bold heading! Use a few of the same words from each question in the heading. Feel free to vary the content of the questions to fit your interview (just be sure to use at least one question about technology/informatics):
