The organization that will be discussed in this paper is Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. NCH was founded in 1892 and has a mission to provide the highest quality care to all children and their families, regardless of their ability to pay(Nationwide Children’s Hospital, 2017). NCH is America’s largest children’s hospital and provides more than $114 million in charity care and community benefit services annually. NCH’s facilities cover around two million square feet in just their inpatient, outpatient and research facilities alone. The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is one of the top 10 NIH-funded freestanding pediatric research facilities in the United States(Nationwide Children’s Hospital, 2017). This paper will focus on developing a pediatric cancer and genomic program within the Research Institute, specifically the Institute for Genomics (IGM).
The reason this company is the focus of the paper and program is because I work directly with this company within IGM. Currently, I am an administrative assistant to five clinical directors and two principle investigators within the institute. Not only does this bring a great connection but my cousin, 15 years old, was diagnosed with ALL this past October, causing me to have a specific interest in pediatric cancer.
Within IGM and the research institute in general there is room to grow because the institute is only about a year old, and yet the fastest growing research institute in the United States. The pediatric cancer and genomic research program will be aimed and finding more targeted and precise treatment for children. The goal is to aim for risk stratification, early intervention, and more targeted therapy (Nationwide Children’s Hospital: Research Institute, 2017). Principle Investigators will aim at finding genetic linkages and possibly more enhanced treatment options for various conditions within pediatric cancer. The program will be funded similarly to all programs within the IGM, through grants and the Nationwide Foundation (Nationwide Children’s Hospital: News Room, 2017).
Nationwide Children’s Hospital has a new strategic plan out as of 2017 with goals; integrate and grow genomic medicine across the enterprise, enable genomics across clinical service lines, database genomic and clinical data from an increased number of patients, invest in genomics and computational genomics talent, and scale their genomics IT infrastructure and capabilities (Nationwide Children’s Hospital, 2017). Within this strategic plan, the program for pediatric cancer and genomic research will help incorporate both the research and clinical realms and allow for more patients to participate.
